It's a comic strip, do you expect it to be naked?

Really, why not debase the author because he lives on the same planet as us?

And, Marko should watch out with being the messenger, he could be jinxing himself as the transparent third for these comic writers.

Me and pwrstrkdf250 are on the same page. I read the funnies about twice a week...

And I never noticed anything particularly biased/religious...swear to goodness.

Hmmm...

Funky Winkerbean had a really great joke in it today, but it was completely killed by the fact that both characters looked like they were on the verge of suicide while saying it.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/funky.asp?date=20070429

You can't really read the text on that site, but it's basically the Superman origin story, and in the final inset panel, the dialog is:
"You never told me you were adopted!"
"You never asked."

"NC Pulitzer Prize Winner Killed In Car Accident

Doug Marlette, who once worked for the Charlotte Observer, was 57

Raleigh, NC -- Doug Marlette, a Pulitzer-winning cartoonist and North Carolina native who once worked at The Charlotte Observer, was killed in a single-car accident Tuesday morning in Mississippi, authorities said. He was 57.

Marlette was the passenger in the car, which struck a tree in wet conditions just before 10 am, said John Garrison, the coroner in Mississippi's Marshall County.

"Evidently, it hydroplaned, left the highway and struck the tree," Garrison said. "There was heavy rain in the area at the time."

Marlette's editorial cartoons and his comic strip, "Kudzu," are syndicated worldwide.

Marlette had been in Charlotte for the funeral of his father, who was buried Friday. He was on his way to see friends in Oxford, Mississippi, at the time of the accident.

^^

I put a thread in Chit Chat about this--apparently nobody gives a damn. Maybe they just don't like me.

In any event, "Kudzu" is a great comic strip, but I like Marlette's editorial cartooning even more. He was a talented North Carolinian--he will be missed.

I saw a family circus a few days ago, i think the Sunday before last, featuring the orange haired kid, jimmy i think, waking up and saying enthusiastically "I dreamed that god was saying the pledge of allegiance" Though i find this level of stupidity revolting, i can't say that I'm not impressed that he was able to come up with stupidity of that magnitude, i mean on so many levels, the smug look on his face, the fact that his mom apparently stares at him all night because she was in the room with the door closed when he awoke, and of course the many layers of strange implications of the thing he said.

^^ that sounds like some Johnny Hart (BC) stuff right there.

By the way, Bil Keane does the sunday strips. his son, Jeff Keane does the daily panels.

back when Bil was doing all of them, they were all pretty retarded. Jeff's are actually a bit more subversive

Sucks about the Kudzu guy. Maybe cartoonists should have a grand finale of strips prepared in case they suddenly die. But I'm glad Hart didn't have any. I can't imagine what kind of sappy bullshit he would've made.

This thread made me go through the last couple weeks of Funky Winkerbean.

Good heavens, what's this guy's deal? The worst part is that he still goes for the punchline at the end, even after delivering the most depressing situation ever.

Morbid *shudder*

B.C. wasnt undertones, it was right up front...if you dont like it dont read it.

But you acting like this towards someone that never made you read their comics or follow their beliefs is pretty idiotic. its ok for you to criticize someone else's beliefs by ridiculing them in a thread after they die, yet somehow he offended you by publishing something that you could have avoided reading every day if you wanted by choice?

speaking of parodies of themselves...some people want everything to be so neutral and open-minded that they end up becoming closed minded themselves. i find it funny that as a Christian I can enjoy bothsides(something like his comics and also enjoy family guy, south park etc. making Jesus jokes) but the people who arent Christians get offended by this? always seems ironic to me over who makes more of a fuss.

time and place.

the comics page isnt your personal bully pulpit for proselytizing your politicized jesus bullshit.

and i dont want the Democratic National Committee or American Atheists to run comic strips either.

well unfortunately that is the newspapers fault then. if hes writing it and the papers are printing it he has no reason to stop.

get mad at the papers for printing those kinds of comics.

i dont think it would last more than a day in ChitChat. but, then again, i dont know how the hell it lasted so long heree

I'll argue this is Soap Box material though.

freedom of speech, religion and press... separation of church and comics ... the pervasive influence of religion and politics in american entertainment

one thing is certain: Funky Winkerbean does suck, to be sure
