yeah i've kept a close eye on things since the story first broke. its unfortunate news. RIP Julia Campbell. From my understanding she was an amazing volunteer and friend to those who are over there now.

So far there are no plans for my departure date to change but the country desk will make that call if necessary and call all 76 of us who are scheduled to leave.

I want to do this sooooo bad, but bc I am type I diabetic, there are very limited places they could send me and those fill VERY quickly.
My friends that have done peace corps have had amazing experiences and one of them even found love.
GO FOR IT! This looks so good on resumes as well.

definitely try 1985...phils is the best place to be if you have health issues. we are well taken care of!

Thanks for the update! Are you keeping a blog or anything? I'm thinking I'll probably be doing Americorps now, and possibly peace corps afterwards. What project are you down there to work on?

an old thread... I'm currently a second year volunteer in Morocco in the environment sector, have about nine months left. The time is flying by.

\/ I met a volunteer from the Madagascar program who was in Morocco shortly after that program was suspended, certainly unfortunate it happened. As a general rule the volunteers are given the option of continuing their service in a different country if they choose to. The volunteer I met will be in the new Morocco stage which starts in a few days.

My friend and her husband did it. They got placed in Madagascar, Madagascar exploded into violence, they were emergency e-vac'ed to South Africa, then sent back to America with a pat on the back and a "Good luck finding a job!" in the middle of the shit economy last year. They had been in the Peace Corp for about 8 months when all that happened

thanks for the bump. So I am thinking of doing this. I figure if it takes like a year I can apply and then either hope i get a job or continue trying to get into the PC. How did yall decide on which region to try to get?

i think i'm leaning toward central/south america/caribbean. I either want to go on the environmental thing or for parks/wildlife, both of which i think will be offered in that area. Plus i've taken some spanish.

not dnl - If things go smoothly on the medical clearance it should take a little under a year. The most time intensive part for me was simply the filling out the application and getting the references.

As for which region placement it's essentially your personal preferences vs. where your skills/language make you a good fit. When I applied my top three regional choices where Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia and the South Pacific, I hadn't given much thought to Northern Africa, Middle East or Muslim countries in general. However, from talking to the recruiter I found out that there was a general shortage of people with my major so there was a high demand to fill certain regions, so he recommended and nominated me for Northern Africa. When filling out the application (unless they've changed it) they will ask for your top three regional choices along with this question:

Quote :
"I am willing to go anywhere and do anything as needed.
I am willing to go anywhere, but wish to use a specific skill(s).
I wish to go to a particular geographic region, but will do anything needed.
I wish to go to a particular geographic region and use a specific skill(s)."

Best of luck though!

^^thanks for the input...the more i think about this the more i want to do it. i mean seriously and literally i will never find an opportunity like this in life. at least i don't think. other than graduating NCSU it will probably be the most rewarding thing i'll ever do in life.

If it's that important it looks like you'd find a way to take the day off work.

i mean i could try to switch with someone. but seriously, even you i think could not deny that it was poor planning on their part to not give people at least a weeks heads up.

There's plenty of meetings/events that you'll be able to attend throughout the application process. Granted it would've been nice for you to go before actually submitting an application...but the info sessions really shouldn't make-or-break your decision to apply. If you go to the main PC website there's a "Find Local Events" link where you can find other info sessions or local contacts.
