but the problem can be curbed... but as long as we have people shoving in our faces how they're different and don't want to be equal... then it will always be rampant..

As long as humans exist, we will find ways to exclude those who are different from ourselves. People naturally find the familiar comforting and are scared of the unknown. 4/13/2007 2:03:12 PM |

I remember when I went to highschool at Southeast Raleigh how dumb I thought the Black kids were. And I know that sentence taken out of context sounds wrong, but hear me out. The school had the largest computer network in the state, tons of magnet programs, hell you could get Cisco certified just from taking classes there. They built the school in the inner city poor areas so that Black kids could take advantage of it. I'll be damned if I didn't see gang fights, thugs, dropouts, from all these kids who were wasting the advantages that were being given to them. I remember being a TA for the remedial classes which was comprised of 100% black kids who screwed up. I just wanted to shake them and be like "What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you realize the advantages you're being given that you're just wasting you dumbass?" 4/13/2007 2:05:08 PM |

I disagree. Most of the racism seen in young people today comes from the disconnect between what they are told to think and the reality around them.
Stereotypes are usually based on percieved reality. It's pretty easy to make stereotypes about races that hold true more often than not. Telling someone not to stereotype is telling them to ignore what they see around them. Kids frequently rebel against this and form their own conclusions.4/13/2007 2:13:49 PM |

maybe i should clarify, i'm talking about kids, like 10 year olds
i never felt any slight bit of inherent threat from a kid of another race in elementary school for example
i'm not talking about like 17 year old kids
in my elementary school for example, there were white guys, white girls, black guys, black girls, and maybe a couple asians or latinos...it just seemed normal] 4/13/2007 2:21:57 PM |

They don't see the blackness, they see the image. Its the same image that got Julius Hodge shot even though he was not in any way trying to associate with "thug life" in Denver. People associate certain urban styles and images with a dangerous segment of the population (gangs and drug dealers). HipHop culture embraces this image because a good chunk of the music embraces the lifestyle (because it is a representation of the roots/past for some). Think of how many rappers have absolutely no experience with being a pimp, dealing drugs, or gang-banging yet still rep it. When others that aren't associated with the dangerous crowd express themselves with similar clothes, language, etc. then it is only naturally for people on the outside to parallel the nefarious attributes as well. If I wear a cowboy hat, big belt buckle, boots, drive an F350, and whistle Waylon Jennings tunes all day then people are going to assume I'm a redneck and attribute certain preconceptions about me. Its the same way people stereotype Christians as Bible-thumping, hard-core right-wingers that only care about offing homos and saving babies.4/13/2007 2:57:40 PM |

If you actually dress like that then it's very likely you are a big redneck. Conversely, many if not most young black males dress "thug" casually, but most of them are not actually thugs if you talk to them.

So only rednecks can run a horse ranch? What I described is probably more common in the regions of Canada where my Dad's family lives than it is in North Carolina... and they are from the stereotype you would think they are.

True, they aren't thugs but are they not still trying to portray that same image of "thug" life?

Yeah, I didn't like the wording when I wrote it... what I meant is that its a part of their community and even their past... its not that they embrace it in a glorifying way but acknowledge that it is what surrounds their environment. At least, that is what the rappers say when they talk about it.4/13/2007 3:22:01 PM |

Some of it may be for shock value but a lot of them probably think it when dealing with black people IRL. And it's well past the point where shock value is the main reason. It's become really predictable.

I disagree completely. Its like TreeTwista said, if you see a white, hispanic, or asian dressed up like a thug you associate thug attributes to him. People associate destructive/defiant attributes to punk style too. There is a distinct difference between having an urban style and looking like a thug... just like there is a difference between the way looks of George Strait and Larry the Cable Guy.4/13/2007 3:29:35 PM |

I know people (well, one person...) too who dress like that and aren't rednecks. But around here in NC at least, it's better than 50% chance they are a redneck. I could see it being less certain in other parts of the country though.4/13/2007 3:35:45 PM |

First off, its not just dress that makes your image... attitude, demeanor, and association play just as much of a factor when making your image. No one said that gangsters and thugs have to fit a specific image, the point is that they generally do have similar characterizations. Julius Hodge got shot because the outfit he wore in the colors that he wore pissed of some gang-bangers in Denver so they lit up his car. Image is HUGE in that subculture... hell, it defines them in many cases. What stylistic image do hardcore rap artists that glorify the lifestyle portray in their videos and music? I thought Trick Daddy did a pretty fair job of describing what he felt defined a thug. There is a thug image that people yearn to replicate. When people, who don't necessarily act like a thug, try to maintain that image of a thug it is only logical for people to ascribe those attributes to them... its a logical assumption.4/13/2007 3:50:27 PM |

What about those people who have bumper stickers that say "i'm redneck and i'm proud"?
I don't see any blacks with bumper stickers that say "i'm a nigger and i'm proud".
Redneck is a slur, but not in the same category as nigger.

^^ Just because it's a more socially acceptable word doesn't make it okay. The bumper sticker analogy is the same as Black poeple calling each other "nigga" colloquially.
You hear people saying "that's gay" and "faggot" all the time but it never gets the same backlash as slurs against Blacks. Why is that? How is that fair to Gay people? What about all the Gay jokes that happen in movies, tv, that are just "okay" to heterosexual people? Blades of Glory is a good example.
If you are against people using slurs then you should be against people using all slurs, that includes niggers, kikes, spics, chinks, fags, AND rednecks.

Whites calling blacks "nigger" alludes back to slavery. Blacks don't like whites implying that they still dominate them (which is why they also don't like whites calling them "boy", "monkey" etc. It's not just nigger. It's anything that smacks of slavery).
People calling each other redneck doesn't allude back to anything. Last I checked, there was no gay trade the same way there was a slave trade.
You can't gloss over the difference in degree.

Quote : | "I know that the words aren't as bad right now according to society. What I'm saying is that they should be." |
Some ephemeral notion of what society thinks has nothing to do with it.
It has to do with the REAL fact that whites owned blacks for several generations and legally treated blacks as a second class until recently (within a generation). Blacks and whites are still wary of the recent past.
You are repeating the same false argument over and over. Just because the words share some properties (being derogatory) doesn't mean they share all properties (historical implication). Hence, people rightfully react to the words differently.
Blacks don't want whites to stop saying nigger because its derogatory. They'd have to campaign against thousands of words if derogatory was the only standard. They want them to stop saying nigger because its racist.

^I'm just trying to point out the double-standard people apply. People seem to be alright by saying that stuff is "really gay" or calling people "faggot." I bet tons of Black people do this as well. How can they be alright with throwing slurs around towards one group when they themselves would get offended if people threw around slurs towards them?
Quote : | "They want them to stop saying nigger because its racist." |
Yeah and I want people to stop saying redneck because it's racist. And that also goes for cracker, saltine, ghost, whatever.
Oh and while you're at it, stop saying faggot and saying that stuff is "gay" when you mean that it sucks. I don't say "Man that is really black" when I mean that something is bad, do I?
Oh and while you're at it, stop making humor in situations that poke fun at being gay in mainstream media. Flamingly gay types in shows for comedy is the same as putting a jive talking minstrel.
And to the person who said I shouldn't be comparing the two groups, why the hell not? They are both groups that claim that they are being treated poorly by the rest of society...
