You can go into the options mode and turn the difficulty way down until you get out of the temple and get yourself a gun. Then turn it back up.5/8/2007 10:43:04 PM |

shrug, i decided to change char types since i never finished the original as a ranged energy weapon guy (i got to some mutant beast town and they constantly raped me).
i did a strong char with melee weapons (despite you guys saying it was worthless). i have had a lot easier time and while it still can be rough fighting, i do a lot better and the game moves quicker. 5/8/2007 11:57:38 PM |

WASTELAND!!!!! pay homage you little creeps, there is a game called WASTELAND that predates Fallout. It is very well written and exciting: a task easy to do now with graphics and 3D whizbang crap. It came with a booklet that was an interesting integration of copy-protection and cheater-misleading. Throughout the game, you are prompted to look up paragraphs in the booklet. You are warned not to read paragraphs other than those prompted: nobody can resist. It is so interesting how carefully missled you get... In a wasted main street of Needles "one of your guys" opens fire... 1 Leather Jerk explodes like a blood sausage. 5/9/2007 12:58:14 AM |

no that's how those goldbox D&D games were, Wasteland and a pretty complicated world to interact with and there weren't many busywork "missions" and "vaults", just stuff to do all of which progressed the adventure. By far the best part of the game was the tastefully gritty and sunburned melancholy dialog boxes; afterall, the world ended and life is hot and dangerous. 5/11/2007 3:03:27 AM |

for me 2 is starting to go the way of 1. im at a point where im running around and every quest seems too difficult. this time i went melee, but i dont think i got my stats right cuz i can dish out dmg, but not fast enough compared to guns. probably gimped myself
oh well. hopefully 3 will fix some of the problems.

What are your stats? 5/12/2007 2:55:20 PM |
cyrion All American 27139 Posts user info edit post |
i focused on str and endurance, everything else is around average. maybe slightly lower perception. i didnt realize the importance of agility.
so its something like 9str, 7/8end and 5 for most other stuff. im a pussy, i shoulda dropped int and charisma lower for what i was going for (though it has helped me out in some situations).
it was awesome for a while in the beginning. id dish out some heavy pwnage to the lower level enemies. teens dmg that early was awesome. now im somehwere in the middle of the game doing 5-10dmg a hit and getting blasted for 10-30 by 5 enemies at once. i basically use a sledge or combat knife and carry around TONS of weapons cuz no one has the money to buy them and my followers can only use so much.

i don't remember where but i was thinking you could pick up a super sledge somewhere around mid-game
you can always head towards san fran and pickup some powered melee weapons around there 5/12/2007 8:03:50 PM |

Agility's key, though, for any fighting character.
The only way to skimp on agility is if you have someone who just talks through everything and sneaks around. 5/12/2007 8:20:43 PM |

yeah, you cant do enough dmg if you are low on agility. not sure whether i want to just give up and start over (cuz its hard even when i lowered the settings, which i didnt want to). GIMME A RESPEC!!! 5/12/2007 9:37:03 PM |

one thing I wish I had done was only put 7 points into STR because power armor gives you +3 STR. (if I remember correctly) 5/12/2007 10:46:14 PM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
Dude, as a melee character you have to have 10 agility.
You could just stock up on jet and use it in the tough battles, but you will be addicted to it hardcore.
I remember I went into combat with one of the jet addicts in the den for some reason once, and the dude had like 40 action points.

Wasteland sucks compared to Fallout.
Wasteland is a good game, but Fallout is probably the best RPG in the history of computer gaming. I'll give Wasteland props for originality and for being the inspiration for Fallout though. 5/14/2007 7:15:01 AM |

^^what is this, the indy music thread of entertainment? yes people remember wasteland. yes it was a great game. but just because it was first doesn't mean it was the best (it's like OMG Modest Mouse was so much better before everyone liked "Float On")
and I don't understand what you mean by bells and whistles - if you're trying to say that a much more robust, indepth, and interesting character development process is the hallmark of a game that's not as good as the first, then you're just being a dipshit.
but hey man, 5 chips is 5 chips (best line ever from the series - who else remembers it?) 5/14/2007 10:11:59 AM |

ok ok, must admit something...gulp... I never actually played Fallout: at least not more than for 15 minutes. Sorry guys. I did have it tho, it came packaged for free with some other game I bought like 10 years ago so I assumed it was crap. Years later, I read somewhere that it was widely considered the true sequel to Wasteland; as opposed to some rubbish called Wasteland2 that i've never seen. I used to be so smart and busy that I couldn't play games but now that I'm a bum, I think I'll play through Fallout. Especially since ppl are saying it's the best game ever and stuff. 5/14/2007 1:48:26 PM |

its official. my character still sux even having 10 agility, str, and end. perhaps i should just run around and level up. im doing better than before, but he still sux donkey dick when needing to fight multiple thugs with guns (in pretty much any quest i can choose now).
ive got metal armor mk ii, combat knife / sledge. perks are 2 bonus h2h/melee dmg and something else i forget. maybe ill try dicking around new reno to level up some since i didnt do many quests there yet.

^^ Play the first one first, it's great, but if you play the second one first you might not appreciate the first one, since there are lots of perks/guns you will wish you had.
^ Consider using a perk to tag Big Guns sometime later as a skill, it works well with good strength, and a heavy machine gun/supersledge combo works great. And leveling up around new reno would be a good idea, try to find and do all the quests you may have missed.
Also, equip your NPC companions with nice guns, and they can cover you.

i usually started about mid game with placing a ton of points towards energy weapons and then targeted the eyes on every shot. it was pretty effective
from experience energy weapons are much more effective at the very end then big guns are 5/14/2007 9:05:45 PM |

No way, Bozar and Vindicator are as good as any energy weapon.
I have scored over 1000 damage with a bozar one time.

http://fallout3.wordpress.com/
Quote : | " The article is based on an hour long demo GI was given. I’ll list the high points
- Game runs on an evolved version of the Oblivion engine. Third person view has been reworked since the verdict was that the Oblivion version sucked balls.
- Game starts with your birth and your mother’s death in a vault hospital. This is essentially the character customization part of the game. Your father hands you up to have your DNA analyzed and you get to pick out all your character traits. Your dad takes off his mask to reveal similar traits to the ones you picked.
- You grow up in the vault and as you grow you get your first book titled “You’re Special” which allows you to choose you baseline stats for each of your 7 primary aptitudes. You’ll also get your first weapons and wrist computer (menu) as you get older and take tests to determine the initial layout of your skills and traits.
- Every aspect of character creation is based on S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system. Of your 14 skills you can tag 3 to grow at a faster rate than the rest as you level up.
- Battle system is called the Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.). The article states. “While you’ll certainly be able to tackle enemies in real time using first person shooting, V.A.T.S. lets players pause time and select a target at their leisure”. Battle system still uses action points, but once you’ve used them up you’ll still be able to fight targets in real time while they charge back up.
- Game is still violent and gory. One of the featured screens is of a guy’s head exploding in super gory detail. Apparently all gory deaths in the game will be in slow motion.
- More than one way to play the game. Go balls out and kill people, or sneak past situations, or perhaps talk your way out of situations.
- Enemies can target you just like you can target them, so you can get injured in very specific points on you body. This in addition to an all new health/radiation system. This new system has you measuring how radiated certain things (like water) are and how they affect you when you consume them.
- Karma system returns[…]
-Yeah once you’re in the V.A.T.S. system every combat move you make uses AP. The amount of AP is based on your agility rating. So things like targeting specific areas etc use AP. Also things like distance etc factor into your hit % while you’re in the V.A.T.S. system.
At least that’s how it reads.[…]
-Yeah the article is chock full of screens, but I can’t post them =(
They have some really great environment shots, Some screens of the inside of Vault 101, and a really awesome shot of a first person encounter with a super mutant and another where the main character has a weapon called “The Fatman” which is a handheld nuclear catapult.
Think post apocalyptic oblivion and you’re right about there in terms of graphics.[…]
-It seems that outside of the VATS system everything is real time. The only time the game pauses is when you enter the VATS system and start using AP and issuing commands. The article doesn’t really say much more than that, but they do say that the game is geared more towards a role-playing turn based style as opposed to a twitch gaming style of play.
-It doesn’t say anything specifically about party members, but there’s a section that talks about how integral NPC’s are to the game, and that a lot of the progress in the game will be made via quests.
EDIT. A little caption under a screen shot says you’ll be able to hire henchmen to help you out but this is definitely not a party based game. Also Bethesda confirms that there’ll be a dog in the game.
-As a matter of fact they do. The game does not scale like oblivion, so if you enter a high level area expect to be promptly murdered.
Also, I just read a little caption.
Level cap is 20.
Definite ending to the game, but there are 9 - 12 possible endings.
-It is XP based. Most of your XP comes from quests." |
Very interesting. The combat sounds very confusing, they do a terrible job of explaining it, but other than that it makes this game seem cool and non Oblivion like.
It could also be completely fake, I guess we will know in a few days when the magazine comes out.6/15/2007 3:41:48 AM |

By the way, this site has the biggest bunch of whiny bitches I have ever seen in my life. Fallout 2 is literally my favorite game OF ALL TIME, but I'm still looking forward to this game immensely, and think it could be awesome.
Reading some of the comments it looks like the VP of Bethesda raped their mothers or something, these guys seriously worship Fallout, if ANYTHING is changed they go apeshit. They would riot if they changed the number of tag skills from 3 to 4.
As you can imagine, they aren't to happy right now. 6/16/2007 5:03:05 AM |

the battle system kinda sounds like a cross between fallout, first person, and KOTOR. really though, the game would probably be lame with really beautiful environments, all these fancy features, and old school 3rd person turn-based combat. it doesnt hurt to give something new a shot. KOTOR style pause-go action wouldnt be bad at all. 6/16/2007 10:10:14 AM |
