if you've got something to say, say it... your constant whining around behind me in threads is getting pretty old.

or, feel free to tell me how the hell a mustang really compares to a built bronco (besides the similar age/maintinance issue) or other off road oriented vehicle. i've personally owned locked cars and locked trucks, and worked on/driven countless others. they don't compare. a truck hides a locker/spool MUCH better than a car, and is just a completely different driving experience all together.

i'm 100% sure I didn't compare them, only the type of project he'd be undertaking (30+ yr old vehicle)

as to the locker, i've wrenched 4x4's too and a locked axle is a locked axle

if i get that big CJ, i have a feeling that the rear lockright might get replaced with an ARB. hell, it already has onboard air. put a set of more highway-friendly gears in it, then when those 40s are worn out, put stock-height springs back on it (keeping the SOA) and slightly smaller tires.

think i might go $5500 on it. MAYBE 6k.

you mean apart from mustangs regularly being said to handle like a truck and they both are cheap fords with v8's, frequently 302's, have solid rears and are more often than most other cars optimized for off-road (drag strip is off road) applications to such an extent that they're barely roadable?

well, i was high bidder on that CJ with a bid of $4550. I can't imagine he'll sell it for that price, but at least if he drops a really good 2nd chance offer, I'll have first dibs.

Hey Ive had a 66 bronco for about 2 years. Ive always wanted one since I could drive. My parents would never let me have one in my earlier driving days. Mine is about 95% restored some Ive done and some other owners have done. I will say it is not my daily driver. Ive had to spend a lot of money on things like the transmission and now im having a 351W built. They are blast to own. Mine apraised $12,000 but only paided $8500. Its not in perfect shape but it sure turns heads when i drive it. If you decide to buy it you will deff need to learn how to work on it. The best thing is that there are about 5-10 web sites that have every thing you need to rebuild them.

i'm capable of normal repairs/installs. doing something like an engine swap is almost certainly beyond my ability (although i've never tried it...i'm sure i'd take forever and go nuts, at best). I suspect I'd have a helluva time doing something like a transmission swap, too (even with a helper kit. without a kit, i'd DEFINITELY be in way over my head).


normal shit that breaks/dies and has to be replaced? generally fine with that. bolt-on stuff? generally fine there. I can work metal with a functional degree of competency, stick/MIG pretty well, and oxy-acetylene/TIG...uhhh, functionally.

I've done bodywork on and painted a motorcycle. Wasn't a pro job, but it beat the hell out of the Krylon touch (until I tried to get too fancy with flake in the clearcoat, got a bad run, and when I sanded it out and re-sprayed, it looked kinda shitty b/c the flake wasn't even).

one of my roommates in WA is a total gearhead, too. Has a Z28 with either an LS6 or LS7 swapped in...i can't remember...i just know he ran into lots of problems with the wiring harness, had to have a custom one built, and it makes an asston of power. Also has a sick FJ-40, minus engine/tranny/t-case. Think he's going SBC/NV4500. He also used to work on engines for a race team...he's pretty savvy, and said he'll help me for beer if I try to tackle anything really significant.

if ur looking for a DD i probablly wouldnt go for anything uve shown thus far. with a little work and maybe some engine/tranny/tcase swaping(not necessary by all means) this

bullshit. besides differences in types and brands of lockers, tire size, vehicle weight, and wheelbase GREATLY affects the effects of a locker.

eh, when it comes to diesels there's not really anything brand specific. i see what you're saying though. cummins have been put in bigger ford chassis from the factory. also, if you want to get technical the powerstroke is a navistar engine not international. navistar owns 100% of international truck and engine. the old 6.9 and 7.3 idi motors were internationals.

the 4bt would really be a much better choice for an eb if you're serious about a diesel swap. it's alot smaller/lighter than a powerstroke, all mechanical (none of the electronic bs, direct injection crap, etc.). you'd have to do some pretty serious body/frame/suspension work to get a powerstroke in.

yeah, i've got an old rc. no way in hell it's worthy of spending that kind of $$ or time on though.

that 4 speed is an SM465

taillights don't work. starter switch is a pushbutton switch. otherwise says it's ready to go...no problems other than dents.

I fucking love Scouts. Except the fact that they rust so damn badly. It's really hard to find one that hasn't totally rusted out the rear wheel wells/tub.

A Detroit Locker would be much, much better for a DD than a welded diff, especially with 35s.

^^ yeah, i'd put an automatic locker in the rear (or even a posi in the rear with locker up front). i'd even go for a spool over a welded diff...at least then i know it won't break and trash the whole works.

still, if i can grab it for $1000, i think it'll be more than worth it. that leaves me free to get a fairly nice sportbike and likely another car as a DD...maybe another (tamer than the last) Miata. some sort of inexpensive sports car--lots of curvy mountain roads around to put it to use on.

you won't notice the welded rear much. the tires are big enough, wheelbase long enough, and it weighs enough. doesn't it snow where you are? if so, a welded/spooled rear is actually better for that. it's predictable, where as a mechanical locker can go from unlocked to locked and send you sliding before you know what hit you. you also don't have the associated clicks/bangs that a mechanical gives. not saying a welded/spooled axle is better, it's just not bad and even has some advantages.

I've DD'd a spooled rear truck for two years,and never had a problem. been in deep snow, ice, mud, rocks, and pavement. really haven't noticed accelerated tire wear either. its bulletproof and always on. my next rig will get a spool too.

^^^ it doesn't snow much on the island (couple of inches once or twice a year, supposedly), but it snows like a mad dog if you go inland. that's a big part of why i want a badass 4x4.

1. wheeling is fun

2. i am a ski bum if there ever was one, and now i'm right by tons of places to go, and don't want the weather to ever stop me (hell, the more it snows, the more i wanna go!)

3. gotta have a backseat for a child seat and so my buddies can ride with me to the ski slopes.

^^^if you know how to drive worth a crap and understand what reactions it's going to give, it doesn't make any difference.

^^case in point. his 4 runner is lighter and on a smaller tire, and you can hardly notice the spool.

talked to the dude again...he's gonna email me more pictures. hopefully go check it out (and maybe buy it) later today. said the lift is suspension (aftermarket springs), and doesn't believe it has any body lift. also said rust is minor and floorpans are good.

the "aftermarket springs" leads me to believe that it's not spring over. it would prob have ricockulous lift on lift springs AND a spring-over.

what exactly am i looking for on the steering besides no leaks from the box? where am i looking for binds?

well, the Scout was AFU. inch thick slabs of bondo falling off of the sides, springs and shackles looked feeble, turn signals didn't work (along with with taillights), fuel gauge didn't work...

but most importantly, it didn't fucking run. it would fire up if he poured gas in the carb, but die after a few seconds. i don't feel like fucking with all of that stuff, because i can get a truck that works for the same price.

i found a killer deal on a 1st gen Miata for a DD, but it was on craigslist w/o a phone #, and i couldn't email him from my roommate's PC, and it got sold before I could buy it. 87k miles, perfect body, for $2000 obo...just kinda needed a new top (but not badly).

yeah, that's kinda what i'm doing. i don't REALLY need a 4x4 until ski season--i actually am looking more for a cheap sports car first...that way I'll have something to drive when I sell my Evo, and I won't have to scramble to buy something.

of course, I'm still looking for 4x4s...if I find a good deal on one of them first, I'll go ahead and get it.

yeah, i kinda expect a K5 or Ramcharger will be what I get. lot of bang for the buck, and they can carry a lot of skiiers and skiing gear.

early Bronco is my favorite, followed by FJ40. I'd pay more for one of those, but prob not what it would take to get one like i'd want. CJ would be my next choice, with YJ close behind. The Scout/big Bronco/K5/Ramcharger are the other rigs I'm really looking for, but I wouldn't pay as much for them (although they are cheaper anyway).

i want a manual trans, though...that rules out a lot of them.
