From the msn column linked on Page 1, the author states:
Quote : | "But even the most conscientious consumer can get tripped up now and then (especially if there's a hold on your deposits, or if the bank messes up -- as mine did recently by processing a $403.50 transaction as $4,035.00)." |
Doesn't the depositing financial institution typically encode the checks? If so, that wouldn't have been her bank's fault.5/27/2007 2:35:55 AM |

I would imagine they can. They should call you so you can get the money before they close it instead of closing it without informing you.
Banks are just businesses. The people who run them care no more about people than anyone else. 5/27/2007 2:45:14 AM |

tell him he needs to go over some people's heads and call someone higher up. You can look up websites and find phone numbers for more important people in the company 5/27/2007 1:53:07 PM |

I don't believe the bank has done anything wrong, and I'll tell you why.
The only recourse to prevent such occurances would be to do the credit checks before allowing you to open an account, which could take days. This would mean, that everytime someone moved to a new area and needed a local account, or was simply opening up their first account, they would have to wait several days before they could utilize banking services.
It it sensible that everyone should be forced to wait several days before opening an account just to prevent this from happening to the 10% of people that get rejected?
How, what banks should do is notify you that your account is under review and liable for closure, so you don't put any more money in the account then you need to. This way, if you do get rejected then it will not kill you to wait a week or so to get your money back.
Or, even better, when accounts are closed they call you and give you the option of coming down to a local branch and picking up a cashiers check.
If it is not too late to prevent the check from being mailed out, then getting the ear of the right person in the company should allow you to pick up said check in person, eliminating the week long wait. 5/27/2007 7:25:56 PM |

Apparently I stand corrected.
Then I wonder what did happen. Did they not bother checking for a few days, or did it take a few days to get a definitive answer from someone in charge at the bank? At some-point someone saying "His credit looks fine to me, but I still want to run it past my boss."
Or, perhaps it is possible that something bad happened to his credit days after he opened the account... 5/28/2007 7:45:52 AM |
