I played GTA 3 and I found the gameplay clunky. Targeting was weak, weapons weren't fun to use, and I don't care much for 'realistic' driving. The alternate stuff (ambulance driving, vigilante missions, and taxi driving) didn't interest me either. Reviews for the sequels say those flaws remain, so I haven't bothered to pick them up. 6/22/2007 7:34:10 PM |

I bought a ps3. Not any games out other than mlb 07, but I got it for ncaa and madden. The bluray is a nice touch, even my wife notices the difference. The planet earth set is AMAZING. 6/22/2007 8:20:23 PM |

i think these multi-sendbacks are the vocal minority. microsofts first string of 360's definitely was messed up, but the quality seems to have picked up since then. my first box lasted a year and then died, but my 2nd one is going strong and didnt cost me a penny.
that said, whoever said the 360 had no good exclusives on the way is just silly. warhawk and lair will probably be a bust, looking at the reviews/previews. things like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Too Human, Lost Odyssey, and Halo 3 all look excellent. Others like Blue Dragon, Quake Wars (oh please god), Fable 2, etc should be good as well. 6/22/2007 9:49:02 PM |

I have been beta testing Warhawk and its fun as hell. Haven't read any poor reviews on it. I think Lair may be a bust though, who knows? Somehow you do though, and you also know that all the exclusive 360 games will be great. Bias?
By the way, Calling All Cars is one of the most fun multiplayer games I have ever played, and it only cost me $10 and online is free. This and knowing that David Jaffe will be releasing more of these smaller scale online games gets me excited. Having Incognito and Insomniac exclusively for Sony is rpetty huge I think. They always release awesome games.6/25/2007 9:30:12 AM |

FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
^^ "compressed" isn't really the right terminology.
X360 games + movies get 'scaled' which simply means the 360 renders them in (usually) 720p or 1080i, then that signal then gets scaled by a seperate chip (a dedicated scaler in the 360's case) before it gets output over HDMI.
The HDMI port enables you to output a 1080p signal to your TV. But really, you're dealing with the same source signal as you would over VGA/Component. There is probably not much difference in quality.

^ Unlike the PS3, which actually outputs in true 1080p, no upscaling (as long as the game is actually 1080p).
The reason why the video in the games get compressed so much is because the data is on DVDs, which doesn't hold nearly as much as nextgen media (bluray, HDDVD). PS3 games are on Bluray, so they can store as much as about 55 Gigs. 6/28/2007 2:34:40 PM |
goalielax All American 11252 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, so maybe compressed wasn't exactly right. but you're still just getting upscaled video that has been made to fit on a DVD. It's doesn't look bad, but you can certainly tell the difference between a blu-ray movie on the PS3 and a normal DVD that's upscaled. 6/28/2007 2:52:35 PM |

twist my words much. i said that those many 360 titles all LOOKED excellent. i read one preview of lair (i forget if it was ign, gamespot, or something else) that said they were relatively disappointed with it. i didnt really expect it to be good either. warhawk looks alright, but fighting helicopters seems like a niche market to me.

Warhawk is the same kind of game as Battlefield, where you can run around on foot, drive land vehicles or fly a plane. Given the popularity of those games, calling it a niche market is kind of silly.
As far as Lair, I havn't seen any previews calling it "t3h best game ev4r" but most of have given pretty positive impressions. The only negative I've seen is people questioning how well flying around using the Sixaxis tilt controls will work. I mean, come on, it's made by the same people who made all the Rogue Leader/Rogue Squadron games, which, while not always excellent were consistently solid releases. I'm sure it won't suck.6/29/2007 3:44:30 PM |
cyrion All American 27139 Posts user info edit post |
i stand corrected on warhawk, since it didnt look like much from the early videos. with the exception of panzer dragoon there hasnt been any good dragon flying games that i can think of though. rogue squadron was great, but we'll see.
and to answer goalielax's question, the 360 had a lot of big games in 8 months:
GRAW is considered a great action game Oblivion is considered a great rpg Dead or Alive 4 is considered a good/great fighter Dead Rising is fun Saints Row wasn't superb, but it definitely satisfied its market at the time Fight Night 3 was multiplatform but best on 360, particularly looks wise Table Tenis is fun Top Spin is great if you like tenis 6/29/2007 10:17:25 PM |
