From Pitchfork:

Quote :
"ust when we thought Jonny Greenwood pretty much had it made after this whole Radiohead thing blows over, along comes this little setback. According to a report from Los Angeles Times' The Envelope, Greenwood's much-feted, 8.1-earning score for Paul Thomas Anderson oilman flick There Will Be Blood will not be eligible for an Academy Award nomination this year.

Those noms will be announced tomorrow morning, and until this development many expected Greenwood's score would easily make the cut. According to sources quoted by The Envelope, however, it's been disqualified because "the majority of the music was not composed specifically for the film."

The parts of the score in question come from Greenwood's British Composer Award-earning piece Popcorn Superhet Receiver (which, incidentally, made its U.S. premiere just last week). The There Will Be Blood score did, however, already earn a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) nomination. Nonesuch, which released the score, has not yet responded to a request to confirm the Oscar disqualification."

just saw it last night. i think it was really good. i'd just be repeating everything you've heard if i told you my opinions about the awesome daniel day lewis, and the really unnerving score, but this movie is really an epic. it's a really well told story that will make you cringe a lot.

Daniel Plainview will own you.

i thought it was overlong. it wasn't horribly compelling. for sure daniel day lewis did a great job and so did the guy who played the young preacher. the story just wasn't all that interesting. i guess it should be expected from a movie based in part on an upton sinclair novel.

The preacher kid also played opposite DDL in The Ballad of Jack and Rose. Very very depressing movie.

I went to the theaters to see it but the only reason I could understand people not wanting to go to see it is that it is over two in a half hours long, but this is one movie where you don't really feel that you are in there for that long, like Zodiac. I've been to hour in a half movies that seemed much longer.

I didnt feel the length of the movie ever. First hour of this movie is amazing. The beginning had a 2001 vibe (little dialog and haunting original music).

I saw it last night and loved it.

**SPOILERS**

I spent the entire movie waiting for DDL to get his come-uppance or for there to some sort of character arc. That fact that the film ends with him being an unrepentant bastard that beats Eli to death with a bowling pin for his own amusement was great. Oddly, I was the only person who was laughing when the closing credits popped up. I worry about what that says about me.

presuming that the only way that someone wouldn't enjoy it is because they didn't "get it" is so stupid.

i thought the performances in this movie were great. hell daniel day lewis was in practically every scene of this 2.5 hour movie. the movie just wasn't particularly compelling to me. i'll probably watch it again at some point.

^^you misunderstood me. i meant it like:
my friend must not have gotten a good idea of what it was about going into the movie because he did not enjoy it at all. when we came out he was confused about a lack of clear plot, and he said he thought there was going to be fighting or something. he said the trailer made it look much more heated.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that it was styled after a Kubrick film. I agree on the beginning completely. What really struck me was the end being a lot like the end of A Clockwork Orange, with "Im finished!" replacing "I was cured!" I also read that the bowling alley set was originally painted all white to give it a Kubrick feel. I'm definitely going to give it a week or so to ferment in my mind and then go see it again.

^ that's strange, actually, because after I saw it I told a few people I thought it had a vibe like a modern clockwork orange. The dark humor and plight of the protagonist were really similar in my opinion

It sounded like someone broke a THX test.

Unless at some point "lets hold the same obnoxious note for 20 seconds" became the apex of music and I never got the memo.

personally i thought it was great. even if it wasnt all composed originally for the movie, the movie wouldnt have had as much tension without that music in there.

i think its a beautiful soundtrack. and jonny greenwood (from radiohead of course) couldnt have composed a more eerie soundtrack. i have it and ive listened to it several times and like it more and more every time.

maybe in my top 5 favorite soundtracks ever. but thats tough to compare.

edit:

one of my favorite tracks from it:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-YgHi8z7rMw

im also not sure that musically one single note can be annoying at least ive never run across one (unless it was played overtop of some chord that was just polar opposites of that note musically)

did anyone else catch this in the movie? maybe it was some other rock formation in the US desert but if they did choose to film an australia they shouldn't have put such an obvious australian landmark in there
