I'm honestly confused by the mocking of the TreeTwista10 post on the last page. He claimed that those three aliases were from the same person, that is why he added and did not divide by three. The total number of people was 1 not 3.

(of course Blind Hate can scream and whine that he is not those three people but lets set that aside for a moment)

Ok, lets suppose I makeup two aliases in addition to my own, say [user]mork[/user] and
[user]mindy[/user]. If I have three computers running and

1.) mathman posts 4 times a day
2.) [user]mork[/user] posts 3 times a day
3.) [user]mindy[/user] posts 2 times a day

Then in truth the mathman has posted 4+3+2 = 9 times a day. No dividing by three because the point is that those three people are one and the same.

This is how I understood the original post, am I missing something here ?

as far as the averaging thing goes, twista was pretty close to right. the only thing he didn't take into account was the number of days that each account had been active. boone's math is not right because even though you only post to those accts at separate times, the number of days being divided is still accumulating on all three accounts.

here's an example:

user 1: active for 100 days, avg posts per day = 5.0

user 2: active for 50 days, avg posts per day = 5.0

user 3: active for 10 days, avg posts per day = 5.0

then that would mean:

user 1 posted a total of 500 times
user 2 posted a total of 250 times
user 3 posted a total of 50 times

if user 1,2 and 3 were all the same person, then the avg posts per day would be:

800/100, or 8.0 posts per day.

so really, what you should be looking at is total posts of the three users and then divide that number by the maximum number of days registered of the three users.

in this case:

(3327+19558+1710)/2450 = 10.0 posts per day

but in the example you made up, you divided by 100... why? if you divide by 100, you are implicitly assuming that the 50 day and 10 day periods are subests of the 100 day period. but why that assumption?

but as has been said, in the actual case in this thread, there is VERY LITTLE overlap, pehaps 10% at most, in the posting periods of the 3 usernames. so in that case, you divide by the maximum number of days registered of the three users, and your hypothetical example becomes (assuming no overlap):

800/160 = 5 posts/day (of course, because you have 3 averages of 5)

there is an overlap, these names didn't stop existing. they all still exist. with each passing day every total post count is being divided by a larger number of days. i am confident that my math is correct. (i'm just surprised no one else got it right)

ok take this example:

i register user 1 on monday and make ten posts that day and no more.
i then register user 2 on tuesday and make ten posts that day and no more.
and i register user 3 on thursday and make ten posts that day and no more.

on friday my posts per day for each user would be:
user 1: 2 posts/day
user 2: 2.5 posts/day
user 3: 5 posts/day

But since I was the one making all those posts over the course of five days, I take the entire time I've been registered (ie the maximum number of days registered of the three) and then divide the total number of posts by that:

30 posts/5 days = 6 posts per day
