The reason that baseball is America's game is because it is the one sport to where you don't have to be extremely talented to be good at it. Everyone can play to a certain degree without much effort. 7/16/2007 3:54:24 PM |

Is that a joke?
It's pretty much a consensus that the hardest thing in all of sports to do is hit a pitched baseball... I think that is why football is so popular at a grassroots level. I mean who can't run and hit people?

Quote : | "---- There are two reasons that the NFL doesn’t get as bad a rap about steroids despite the use probably on par with MLB. 1) it’s ESPNs and the major networks baby and they can’t risk having people question it like they do baseball; and 2) no NFL records are important enough to the national psyche to be risked being broken by guys who have obviously used steroids." |
a few smaller reasons. People expect NFL players to be oversized, and many of them are between 6' and 6'6"... they're just large to begin with, so when the steroids come into play they aren't as noticeable as it is in baseball, where people still hold to the some averagely built look of old-school baseball players...
NFL uniforms also make it easier to cover up massive steroid usage, by making EVERYONE look like hulking brutes...
and the NFL has enough attention drawn away from nightclub shootings and dogfighting that people just don't want to think about steroids on top of that...7/16/2007 3:59:57 PM |

Quote : | "A) A 162 game season often comes down to the last fucking week before the playoffs to determine who will go and who will not. This happens in at least 2 divisions a year. That's not inequality. It's fun to see the "Triple-A" MLB teams (like the Marlins) win some games like they have recently. That's what makes the game great (mentioned above... the farm system).
B) Americans can't fucking respect a defensive game. 30% in baseball and you're pretty damned good. Because the scores aren't 115 - 110 or 35 - 28 means American's won't tune in. Same thing with soccer. Not enough scoring. There's just something about a stolen base then a sacrifice bunt to move the players into position that's beautiful. It's a game of chess.
C) They're not meaningless. You must be a baseball idiot to say that. Games in June and July can often shape or break a season. It's a hell of a lot better than counting teams out by week 4 in the NFL." |
A baseball idiot? really, alright Ill just debunk your arguments with my baseball knowledge then.
1) Okay so in the final week of the season there are approximately anywhere from 5-10% of the teams whose games still matter. In fact, in the final 2 months of the season there are less than 50% of the teams whose games still matter at all. And even that's being generous, I mean let's face it anytime you are 5 games out with 2 months to go it's like having pocket Kk's against pocket Aces. And thats if there aren't any teams in between you and the division leader.
2) Boy, that reasoning was very misleading. You almost had me believing that the average NFL game had 63 points scored when its actually closer to the low 40's combined. A final score of 24-21 would indicate 6 TD's and one field goal. That's 7 total scores, whereas in baseball the average runs scored per game is about 9. The NFL has a hell of a lot more defense than baseball where we have lumbering oafs in the outfield just because its the power era. I mean for god's sake what transpired in the OF with Chris Duncan in the World Series was just excrutating to watch. I can't imagine a Super Bowl team having a starting safety that tripped all over his own feet everytime he was supposed to make a play.
3) Week four of the NFL represents 25% of the season. That's the equivalent of 40 games in baseball. If a team starts out 1-3 in football there is time to rebound, if they start out 10-30 in baseball the show is over. Even if they start out 40-40 they are pretty much cooked unless they win at a near historic rate or they play in the NL Central.
The reason you see different teams winning the world series or emerging in the playoffs is because playoff results are pretty much all random. In a 7 game series you can almost flip a coin to pick the winner, thats been proven by many statistical studies. The edge in baseball is just so slight, that being the "better" team doesn't necessairly mean you'll win the series. However, if you look closely you'll notice that many of the same teams are above .500 every year while others are below .500 every year.
In the NBA, the best teams will almost always rise to the top. In the NFL, there is opportunity to cause upsets but the majority of the time the best team will be identified.
Baseball is alright, but until there is a more fair collective bargaining agreement in place the majority of the country just isn't going to be interested in seeing the same teams be uncompetitive year in and year out. Not to mention that when small market teams do acquire a lot of talent (Oakland, Minnesota, Seattle, etc) they have a small window of time before they are forced to trade it away or watch it vanish thru free agency. That's not a good way to long term support in a small market.

5 games in 2 months is pedestrian???
If the team leading the division tanks it might be pedestrian.
If the division leading team simply manages to win 55% of their last forty games (22-18) then the team 5 games behind would have to go 27-13 (67.5%!) which is an incredibly high percentage of games to win in baseball. Thats like keeping up a 109.5 win pace over the course of 1/4th the season.
And you still have to worry about the team that was only 2 games behind the division leader. Better hope they don't go 25-15 over that same stretch.
Big comebacks in division races rarely happen post All-Star break unless the division leader tanks. 7/17/2007 6:55:58 AM |
