While there's a lot to be said of great equipment, the most important part of the camera is still the 12" behind it...

Um, do you mean the computer or a really tall head?

Sorry.

Nikon had these press events planned way before Canon leaked the release of the 40d (which doesn't have THAT much of an upgrade on the 30d, which isn't that much of an upgrade on the 20d) and the 1Dsm3. Canon issued a press release, Nikon flew in hundreds of respected photographers and journalists (a couple months notice) and put them up for a few days all with the plan to announce the cameras right before the IAAF games http://osaka2007.iaaf.org/index.html back on the 25th, which they were a major sponsor.

^(to JBaz) Yeah, I agree. Like a lot of people are speculating, I bet the D3 will be on back order for a long time like the D200 and the 18-200 VR.

Anyway, full frame is the way to go. Check out some test shots done by Cliff Mautner at a wedding this weekend:
http://cliffmautner.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/09/ok-its-after-1a.html

Straight out of the camera, these incredibly high ISO images look incredible! I never shoot above ISO400 on my D50 or D80 cause the noise just ruins the image, imo.

Check this one at @ ISO4000

Forget the noise level, the colors and contrast look dead on! You know how hard it is to get that much detail in the black suit and the white dress in the same shot.

I agree with the 40D. It's not much of an improvement from the 30D to warrant me to buy it. It may have some cool features and if I still had the XTi, I'd get the 40D. The 20D to the 30D was a waste of an upgrade. I would have to admit, if I didn't start out with canon gear, I would have gotten the D200, but I would probably have switched to Canon later on anyhow.

Now that 35mm sensors pushing technology to the limits and really going into medium format MP size, wonder if Canon or Nikon will go away from the 35mm size and maybe go with larger sensors or even make medium format cameras? I doubt it, but when you think that the 20MP and the 22-24MP D3x to be in the sub 10k range, makes it almost tempting compared to a 20-30k medium format 20MP camera. I know you can't compare them, but it shows a good value. But they do have 59+MP medium format cameras that cost 50k just for the sensor.

Yeah, I'll need to take in an extra $50 to cover the fee they charge though.
