As someone who played, I have a love for the game, and the school I played for. I still love to go. My sister is in the band too, one of the best in the state, so they always put on a good show as well. 8/22/2007 9:49:42 PM |

highschool football is just a really fun atmosphere to me. I like it even better when it starts getting colder. I have fond memories of sitting at games (especially playoff games) in 30 and 40 degree temps. 8/23/2007 6:43:14 AM |

fantastic50, I played in that game....Garner vs. Richmond (we actually played them in 1989 and 1990) yes I'm old too. We somehow got home field for both of them and unfortunately lost both of them. Probably the only thing standing between us and the state title both years. I hate Richmond County.
I just remember looking at the crowd and it was amazing how many people were there. Standing room only to say the least. We put up a good fight both years but they were the better team, just barely.
Garner has been consistently great for over 2 decades, but hasn't won a title since 1987. 20 years.
I remember playing JV in 10th grade and we were ranked 18th in the nation. Ranked #1 in the state both of my varsity years but like I say Richmond County got us both years. Those were some fun times and I just wish we could have beaten them at least once. 8/25/2007 1:59:41 AM |

^^^ I've never seen anything like that 1989 Garner-Richmond game in NC...the atmosphere was just unreal. And I wonder how many thousands were stuck out in the parking lots, given that the fire marshal shut the gates long before kickoff.
Richmond County (and the rest of the MSEC) aren't nearly so feared as they once were. The revolution of the spread, multi-receiver offenses popular in the Charlotte area have taken over. It seems now that every year, Richmond goes undefeated through the regular season, only to be disappointed in the playoffs. Last year, they were routed, 27-0, on their home field by Providence, which was only the 3rd or 4th best team in Charlotte. 8/25/2007 6:33:27 AM |

it's not actually that bad, though, because you have to keep in mind that carrboro is a first year school and they don't have any seniors. all their seniors had to stay at chapel hill high from what i heard. 8/25/2007 11:48:07 AM |

Week Three - August 31, 2007
Triangle-Area Game of the Week Garner (2-0) at Riverside (0-1) -- Riverside upset Garner twice last year; one of those games was in the 4AA East final. I don't expect them to pull off the trifecta.
Other Games Worth Watching
Leesville Road (2-0) at Apex (2-0) -- Another Tri-Eight team gets to challenge Leesville's claim to Wake County supremacy (along with Garner)
Southern Durham (0-2) at WF-Roleville (2-0) -- WFR routed East Wake last week; they're making a strong case of their own as a top-tier ball club. Southern is no slouch, despite two early losses.
Sanderson (2-0) at Middle Creek (0-2) -- Because of strength-of-schedule differences, these teams look fairly even, regardless of their records.
Enloe (1-1) at SE Raleigh (2-0) -- The Eagles have a great running game, which will be challenged by SER's always-tough defense.
The Rest of the Local Games East Wake (0-2) at Millbrook (0-2) Knightdale (0-2) at Wakefield (2-0) Broughton (0-2) at Panther Creek (0-2) Holly Springs (0-2) at Fuquay-Varina (2-0) Triton (0-2) at Green Hope (0-2) Goldsboro (1-1) at Hillside (1-1) Western Harnett (0-2) at Lee Senior (0-1) Clayton (1-1) at South Johnston (2-0) North Johnston (2-0) at West Johnston (0-2) Smithfield-Selma (2-0) at Chapel Hill (1-0) East Chapel Hill (1-1) at Cedar Ridge (1-1)
Best Games From Around the State (and Beyond...)
Independence (1-0) at Cincinnati Elder (1-0) -- Indy's long winning streak, and NC pride, go on the line this week. This game is part of the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge, matching top Ohio teams against powerhouses from other states. Kickoff is at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, and will be broadcast by tape-delay on the NFL Network, and live pay-per-view via the Internet at ohiovsusa.com. (No, I'm not paying to watch it, but just providing the info.)
Pisgah (2-0) at Tuscola (1-1) -- The biggest rivalry in the mountains
Reidsville (1-0) at Cummings (2-0) –- Two very powerful 2A schools, that will both contend for state championships, go at it in a playoff atmosphere. Cummings has scored 146 points in two games, and Reidsville scored a bunch in their opener. It may be that the last team to have the ball wins.
Elkin (1-1) at Starmount (1-1) -- Both teams are down, but "The Battle of the Bridge" is still cool.
Grimsley (2-0) at Dudley (2-0) -- The unofficial championship of Greensboro
Asheville AC Reynolds (0-1) at Owen (1-0) -- 4A powerhouse ACR goes to Black Mountain to meet a tough 2A foe
Richmond Co. (1-0) at Anson Co. (2-0) -- The 4A Raiders almost never lose a regular-season game, but 3A Anson will want to defend their turf.
Thomasville (1-0) at Davie Co. (1-1) -- A very intriguing match-up, as the three-time defending 1AA state champ travels to meet a perennially good 4A team
Wallace-Rose Hill (1-0) at Clinton (0-1) -- 1A and 2A teams from "down east", both of these are very good, year after year, so this will provide a big lift to the victor 8/27/2007 9:08:06 PM |

Gary Merrill is already making a difference at Person; with some last year's top teams struggling, the Rockets could contend for the PAC title.
After this week, Rose plays at Rocky Mount and at Hoggard...they'll have to play their best to win those two.

In high school football, if there is a turnover on a PAT, the ball is immediately dead (the defensive team can't run it back). I can't guarantee it, but I think that the same is true for a turnover in OT, so the ball would have been dead (and the game over) as soon the interception was made. 9/2/2007 12:04:06 PM |
