The government wouldn't dare call for a draft. Not even Bush is that stupid/cruel. A draft would be political suicide, first and foremost. It's one thing if you join the military voluntarily, but NOBODY likes being ordered to go fight in a war. Nobody likes being told to go off and die in some foreign land, and they certainly don't like having their children ordered to do so either. Even though Bush can do whatever he wants because nobody can touch him now (seeing as he'll be gone in another few months anyway), I doubt that the Republican party would give him do it. Because if Bush calls for a draft, it will REALLY piss off Americans and cost Republicans most of their votes.
Second, draftees do not make good soldiers. When you've got people around who clearly don't want to be there, they're not going to perform very well. So having a bunch of draftees would bog down all of our operations. It's not as if our operations are great successes anyway, but that's for another thread.
Third, you've got to imagine how many people would be eligible for service. With about 300 million people in this country, what do you think a good guess would be for the number of newly-turned 18-year olds who are now eligble to fight? Maybe five million or so? I'm not good at estimating these sorts of things, but let's go with five million. Assuming that they're fit (ie not physically or mentally handicapped in such a way as to prevent them from serving), that's five million new recruits that you have to feed, clothe, pay, equip and train. Where's the money for all of that going to come from? Out of our leaders' asses? Wars are already expensive as is, a draft would cost some serious $texas.  8/14/2007 7:59:25 PM
