On the subject of jettas..

I'm looking at a '97 Jetta for a dailydriver but i think the synchro rings or linkages are bad. The guy said you have to hold in the shifter while driving in reverse or else it'll pop out of gear. Also when i test drove it, i had a hard time finding first gear (i had to push it in like i was going into reverse). do you think this is a big deal (as far as the tranny goes) i mean its something i can live with but i'm afraid for the transmission having problems.
