Exactly. Without one, in my view I actually consider it to be indecent/immoral.
And on the flip side...
I don't understand what PROBLEM THOSE FUCKERS HAVE who object to it even when there is a large enough sheet/blanket in place so that NOTHING is visible. 9/11/2007 9:09:04 PM

well it doesnt really matter what all you masculinity-challenged males think about it.... the laws have been consistently changed in every state and municipality so that it's illegal for the employee or proprietor of any private or public business to discriminate against, or otherwise refuse or restrict services to, any woman who chooses to breastfeed her child in public.
so, go ahead and try it... open yourself up to a lawsuit.
and to all you squeamish little men-children who squeal in horror at the sight of a breastfeeding mother: grow a set of nuts before you comment on something you're not even capable of comprehending. I swear if I ever hear anyone talking shit about a breastfeeding mother in some public space, I'll walk right over to them and tell them to shut the fuck up to their face.

Is that right? you know that, huh? As a matter of fact, tits et al. are not something I want to see when I'm eating, pure and simple. Sure, I have no problem with them at most times, and I have no problem with breastfeeding mothers at most times, it's a great thing and I think it's sad that less mothers are doing it. My point is that if you're in a fucking RESTAURANT, wrap it up or take it elsewhere.

I'm thinking of the last time I went into a restaurant to have dinner. We walked past some people, were seated, and we looked at each other, not the people around us. The food came, we either looked at each other or our plates. We paid and left.... Sounds like people have a staring problem or some wierd insecurity. I think we have a winner. It makes no difference to the baby if he has a blanket over his head or not, it doesn't impede his ability to ingest breast milk, and it doesn't impede your ability to lift up a 8oz piece of cotton and check to see if he's doing all right. People who breastfeed in public without covering up are really saying, "Look at me, I'm special, I'm a mommy." No you're not, every person you see here had a mommy and half of them will probably be one eventually if they aren't already.
Maybe I'm prejudiced because I don't want children myself, but the fact that some people who have them feel like they're entitled martyrs because of the "burden" they've taken on pisses me off. 9/14/2007 10:44:17 AM

OK, you lose. In any argument about women's rights, don't imply that you might take a woman's side if she were more attractive. It makes you sound like a self-absorbed jackass.
I don't see the big deal with using a blanket. It's a perfectly reasonable compromise that doesn't infringe on the woman at all. 9/14/2007 11:22:55 AM

Wow, I just stumbeled upon this thread and I am amazed at the amount of people that are bothered by breastfeeding. I guess it goes to show you what an impact the marketing of formula companies has done in the past 100 years. Throughout most history breastfeeding has been the only way to feed babies and mothers feeding their children whenever and wherever they needed to was acceptable untill relatively recently. If a child is hungry it should be fed and breastfeeding is the most natural way to do so.
Additionally those who say "the baby doesnt care if it is covered up" or "it likes being hidden under a blanket" clearly do not have children. Some kids apparently don't mind so much but others, like my son, can not stand it.
Most infants/babys that need to nurse frequently enough for a mother to nurse in a resturaunt are under 2 years old (the world health organaztion WHO reccomends that children breastfeed for at least 2 years). If you are putting your desire to eat a steak without having a mother breastfeeding in your general vacinity (who you don't have to look at) over the needs of the baby to eat then you should definately grow the fuck up. The mother and her family have the same right to go out and enjoy a meal somewhere as you do. 9/14/2007 12:50:45 PM

Seriously, what gives your wife any more rights than the rest of the patrons? If a resteraunt promotes a certain atmosphere, they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who disrupts the dining enjoyment of their other patrons. They are there to run a resteraunt, not cater to the need of self-important mothers who could just as easily go out to the car and breast feed if they don't want to cover up.
Few people in this thread have a problem with breastfeeding, just self-righteous parents. 9/14/2007 1:20:27 PM

what law is it of which you speak?
Quote : | "The Civil Rights Act of 1964 explicitly prohibits restaurants from refusing service to patrons on the basis of race, color, religion, or natural origin. In addition, most courts don’t allow restaurants to refuse service to patrons based on extremely arbitrary conditions. For example, a person likely can’t be refused service due to having a lazy eye . . .
In most cases, refusal of service is warranted where a customer’s presence in the restaurant detracts from the safety, welfare, and well-being of other patrons and the restaurant itself." |
Last time I checked, breast-feeding in public wasn't a civil right. Does it "detract from the safety, welfare, and well-being of other patrons?" Not physically, no, but if the resteraunt feels that the activity is not in line with their policys regarding dress, and they do not discriminate along the above lines (ie. only removing black women who breast feed) then it seems to be at their discretion.
Again, its an act of self-centeredness, not a civil right. There are plenty of ways for a woman to discreetly breast-feed that they need not make it a huge civil issue unless they truly have nothing better to do. 9/14/2007 4:36:21 PM

Yeah, I could personally care less to be honest . . . let the kid suck away all you want, but if someone asks you to stop in their resteraunt . . . sorry, you don't have a "right" to exposed breasts in public, even if there is an infant attached to it.

That's not even the point of this... If a woman wants to feed her child, then she has the right. Who cares if she's doing it in public... if it bothers you that much, then, in my opinion, you aren't very mature.
Most women I know, attempt to be as discreet as possible, but sometimes when a baby is hungry, then it's hungry.
Would you rather listen to a screaming child at dinner? Or have to deal with the knowledge that a woman is breastfeeding close by? I'd go with A..... 9/14/2007 4:49:07 PM

Quote : | "sorry, you don't have a "right" to exposed breasts in public, even if there is an infant attached to it. " |
And that is completely incorrect. Most States have laws similar to North Carolinas.
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/1993/Bills/House/HTML/H1143v1.html
Quote : | ""§ 14-190.9. Indecent exposure.
(a) Any person who shall willfully expose the private parts of his or her person in any public place and in the presence of any other person or persons, of the opposite sex, or aids or abets in any such act, or who procures another to perform such act; or any person, who as owner, manager, lessee, director, promoter or agent, or in any other capacity knowingly hires, leases or permits the land, building, or premises of which he is owner, lessee or tenant, or over which he has control, to be used for purposes of any such act, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00), imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
(b) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a woman may breast feed in any public or private location where she is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother's breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breast feeding." " |
The discussion should be over right here, the woman has the legal right to breastfeed anywhere she wants. If you want to eat without mothers breastfeeding around eat at home or a smokey bar somewhere. Mothers who care enough to breastfeed won't take their babies there. One you have kids I hope you realize that god put those bumps on the front of women for something other than Barely 18 websites.

My issue is not the right or legality of it. It's a decency issue. If it's obvious that so many people are made uncomfortable by it, it would be a good-natured thing to do to cover up or take a brief leave to the car or bathroom/hidden alcove. Sure, it's not illegal and a mother has every right to feed a hungry child...It is also my legal right to fart loudly in the same restaurant, but I choose not to out of respect for those eating around me.
And, for me, it's not even a question of being in 'public,' it's settings where others are eating, specifically, that it seems to me to be disrespectful. I could care less if a woman is breastfeeding in a bus, park, or movie theater...but there are certain things you don't do when in a public dining situation, appetites and enjoyment are somewhat volatile where food is concerned.
