It's done in all sports let it be video taping or just people just mentally watching. I know they used to do it in baseball and in basketball. It's stupid to cheat that way but what can you do?
I think they should use an encrpyted method of sending out calls though. Something like during the first quarter the coach or whoever gives the QB or whoever is reading the play, 3 play calls but the QB knows that only the second call is the one to use during the first half of the game. The second half of the game they switch it to the first play called out of the three. The only problem is there might not be enough time to send out 3 calls if they are in hurry up.
It would be harder to decipher I think. Shit if they really wanted to cheat they could intercept the signal from the transmitter that is being sent to the QB's helmet headset.

its the technology part that is cheating... if you see it with you naked eye and can figure it out on the run, more power to you, they should have done a better job disguising it... but being able to record it, and go back and run the tape alongside the game tape... no.
whats next? Belicheat planting a bug in the opposing coaches headset?? 9/12/2007 11:23:10 AM |

1) This scandal should be known as The Patriot Act
2) Adam Gold was saying this morning that there are now rumors surfacing that the Patriots also planted a microphone into one of their defensive line players helmets so they could co-ordinate the QB's audibles with plays. 9/12/2007 11:30:15 AM |

Why not?
If everyone has the same capability to do it, why should it be illegal? Maybe some good could come if that were allowed, like I don't know, some spontaneity in the field of play for once?
As far as the technology part, every frickin' minute of content the NFL could possibly put on video already is. We might as well tell the networks they're not allowed to pan the camera to the coach or offensive coordinator all game. When watching game film, the coaches might see a pattern off of what was just muttered out of their mouths if they can lip read.

That's so comparative.
Every NFL team follows game tape religiously. If the NFL and any fans think that there's not a team in the NFL that does this they're either naive or full of s***. How can this possibly be made illegal and enforced?9/14/2007 1:41:33 AM |

God, some of you people are ridiculous. Do you really hate the Patriots that much? I'm not a Patriots fan. I'm a football fan and I am not blinded by my loyalties enough to see that the Patriots have been maintaining a level of excellence that should be impossible with free agency. They havn't been winning the past 6 seasons because they cheat. They've been winning because they make great draft picks, smart trades and personnel decisions, have the most clutch QB in the league and the best coach of our generation.
Stealing signals is not cheating. It's an accepted part of the game. The only rule the Patriots broke was having a video camera on their sidelines during the game. It was a stupid thing to do, it got confiscated before the end of the 1st half, and it had no effect on the game. There is no signal telling your special teams to let a guy return a kick 108 yards. They broke the rules, they got caught, and now they've been punished accordingly. That should be the end of it. 9/14/2007 9:23:42 AM |

no shit, i don't think it was punished accordingly though at all. at least a 1-2 game suspension of the coach, yearly first round draft pick (not any traded ones) lost for 2 years, and a fine of at least 5 million....
don't give me that "it didn't affect the game" bullshit, even if it didn't and with todays digital and wifi technology it's not too far fetched to think that they could be getting the info just a few minutes after it occurs. and even if they were not able to get that data in a same day fashion, it shouldn't matter, it's explicitly against the rules to use video cameras on the opponents sidelines. they were even explicitly warned not to do it prior to the season.
what's so fucking hard to believe that there should be appropriate punishment for breaking a rule that you were JUST TOLD NOT TO BREAK?
i don't give a fuck which team was doing it...

If it doesn't give them an advantage...
If it doesn't affect the outcome of the game...
If it isn't any more effective than having someone "in the team press box with a pair of binoculars and a notepad"...
If it's basically the same as watching game tape...
The why did they have the cameraman down there after they were explicitly told not to? 9/14/2007 9:39:09 AM |

Actually, the draft picks mean nothing. The Patriot's management is so damn good that they've already secured a 1st round draft pick from the 49ers and 3rd round pick from the Raiders. That is why the Patriots are so fucking dominant. The video was confiscated during the first quarter, after which the Patriots only led 7-0. They went on to completely dominate the rest of the game. Super Bowl XXXVIII was nearly 4 years ago, get over it already. 9/14/2007 10:02:09 AM |
