I agree some sort of charge other than ATTEMPTED MURDER would be appropriate, but don't forget that these students were threatened with a shotgun, and attacked at a party after the nooses were hung. WTF does that even mean? They could've easily killed him but didn't? The fight lasted a few seconds. He was released from the hospital the SAME DAY and went out to a school function. It's obvious they didn't even intend to seriously injure him.
