Pretty much anything that prevents an obvious empty netter results in an automatic goal. For example, if the pulled goalie throws his stick off the bench to stop the puck, a goal is awarded. Interestingly, though, if the pulled goalie jumps off the bench and stops the puck himself, it's just a too many men penalty, not an automatic goal.
Anyway, there are a lot of provisions for goals being scored without shots taken...if you bank the puck off the goalie's back from behind the goal line, there's no way it can be counted as a shot on goal.10/24/2007 1:30:55 PM |

Players have complained since training camp that the new jerseys, which are supposed to be lighter and allow sweat to evaporate out through the shirts, have instead trapped water inside and gotten heavier. . . ." |
Is this the NHL's equivalent of the new NBA ball that didn't last half the season?

We'll have to see what they replace them with first. If you're not sweating in it, the new fabric seems fine. That article suggests that the replacement jerseys will be cut the same as the new ones, but made of the old air-knit material...but the new jerseys are so fucking tight on the elbows, I'm not sure they can cut them the same without stretch fabric.10/25/2007 10:30:22 PM |

This article pissed me off a little bit, so I called him the fuck out.
Quote : | "Ross,
I'm sure you've already received some emails about this already, but your article about the new Hockeytown, USA is somewhat of a joke. I could not agree with you more about the Wild. I had a chance to visit the Twin Cities and see the Wild play on opening Saturday this season, and it was a fantastic experience. They certainly are worthy of the title, but the "State of Hockey" works just fine.
The bottom portion of your article, on the other hand...
You quoted Minnesota's attendance, but apparently forgot to look at anyone else. Tampa Bay is probably the silliest team listed here; in case you haven't been paying attention, they are the highest attended American team over the last 3 years. Phoenix and Florida... okay, sure, the numbers basically back you up on this one. The problem is, these teams have been terrible for a long time, and history has shown that they are a hot ticket when not playing at the bottom of the standings. Glancing at the numbers, I'm actually pretty surprised that Florida has managed to draw 15,000-16,000 every season despite the fact that they've finished 4th in the Southeast for five straight years and have not made the playoffs since 2000.
Atlanta, no doubt they have some work to do, but they are still a young franchise. Columbus has a great fanbase and solid attendance (happen to watch the draft this summer where their fans filled up the building?), which is a real credit to them since they are the only franchise in the league to have never made the playoffs. I am from Raleigh, so obviously I have quite a beef with you regarding the Canes. They have had the biggest attendance jump in the league each of the last two seasons, and were one of the better attended American teams last year. They are the only major league show in town, and receive great support here in an area that is a mix of born southerners and relocated northerners. Youth hockey is also growing rapidly here. And hey, don't forget about that big shiny thing we won a couple of years ago.
I guess the point I am trying to make here is that things in these "non-traditional markets" are not as bleak as you seem to believe. It really surprises me that a Sharks fan would buy into the traditionalist rhetoric that a handful of noisy elitists have been spouting for the last decade.
If you find yourself tiring of the cold dreary weather this season, take a trip down south and we'll show you that we do love our hockey down here. I have yet to see any Leafs fans tailgating come playoff time wearing shorts while cooking BBQ and throwing back a few cold ones.

^^ We need to put the myth of paid attendance and tickets distributed aside and start focusing on actual butts in seats. The only reason I say that is cause I watched the Florida-Carolina game last night and there were a ton of empty floorsides and the game's atmosphere was dead. 15000-16000 average attendance for the Panthers is irrelevant unless people actually fill them.
By the way, here's a picture of my favorite inflated attendance. 400 when they announced 10,121.

You see the same problem at Joe Louis Arena, Madison Square Garden, and Air Canada Centre with tons of corporate seats that aren't filled. A sold out game last week in New York looked like the Greensboro Coliseum in the 1st period. Obviously no one is really quite as bad as Florida on a consistent basis, but the fact is, to the bottom line of the team, it's how many people bought tickets. If the season ticket holders don't want to show up, so be it. They'll be losing food revenue, but the season ticket holders probably aren't spending much money in-arena anyway. Not to mention Wednesday may have been the worst night in the NHL for attendance that I have seen since before the lockout. A mid week game on Halloween is just not going to do that well. 11/1/2007 10:08:30 PM |
Flyin Ryan All American 8224 Posts user info edit post |
^ Well, as far as watching the NHL and it being an entertaining experience, the bottom line of the owners does not matter. So if the private media want to follow level of interest in a team, we need to follow actual butts in seats, and local TV ratings. 11/1/2007 10:12:17 PM |
Vulcan91 All American 13893 Posts user info edit post |
Nothing I was talking about really has much to do with entertainment value. Personally I don't really give a shit whether anyone goes to Panther games or not; just gives me more to make fun of them about. My beef with the article I posted was that he basically said Florida, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Carolina, and Columbus are failing and will not be around much longer. I don't think this is true at all, and the only team that has big question marks in my mind is Atlanta. 11/1/2007 10:18:52 PM |

Didn't miss a shift. Never question a hockey player's toughness.
And two BRUTAL injuries in the Canucks game last night to Sami Salo (in the face) and Kevin Bieksa (achilles tendon). Apparently Bieksa is going to miss 6-8 weeks, but there was some early speculation that it could be career ending.

^ I did not say the Kings were going anywhere. The Predators will move to Kansas City cause the prospective K.C. owner is friends with the owner of the Kings, and the Kings' owner wants his building in Kansas City to get rent money. So he will ensure all the other owners will back the move. 11/7/2007 8:36:07 PM |
