sweet. i hadn't seen this feature publicized yet.
Even though this can be accomplished in any number of other ways, it's aways nice to have it fully integrated and built right in.

Considering three versions of Vista Upgrades have MSRP's higher than that... no.

Between family packs and student pricing (easily obtained by non-students) people shouldn't pay more than 69 by themselves, or about 30 a machine for groups of machines.

apple haters think that they're charging $129 for a service pack like M$. When infact a service pack is just a patch to fix all the bugs and what not. OS X new releases is more of an upgrade then XP to Vista

It's like Half-life to Half-life 2. Same awesome game with a whole new engine and graphics.

several good previews provided by appleinsider over the last week or two:

Preview 4.0
Finder 10.5
Dock 1.6
Spaces
Time Machine
Mail 3.0
iChat 4.0
Dictionary 2.0

Plenty of cool things in there to get excited about.

Depends on the rep and if Apple hates its education resellers as much as it starting to seem to. Last year they stayed open late and ordered a couple hundred copies of the upgrade, but nobody came. Hopefully if they do something like that this year, they'll advertise it better.

Looks like we will see Leopard for $69 at the bookstore if they decide to carry it:

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/18/leopard-education-pricing-update/

Apparently you can't get that student deal online, though.

Last year they stayed open an hour late since the street time was after the bookstore was scheduled to close. Only about 5 people actually showed up to the release event. Because of that, they're not staying open late to sell it.
They should be arriving friday, but the store will be closed before they're legally allowed to sell it.

Even were the item listed on the bookstore's online store (separate from the apple store) they still couldn't give it to you Friday because they'd be closed.

You can email randy_davis@ncsu.edu and have him reserve you a copy (provided they come in on time of course) and pick it up saturday morning. The bookstore will be open 10-4 saturday and if you can wait that extra 16 hours you can get it for 69 bucks.

buying a Leopard license is only good for upgrading from Tiger, right? I can't buy a license from somebody for $40 and then buy a new macbook from apple without Leopard installed and save $129 off the price of the macbook, right?

The apple Leopard discs, like the Tiger discs before them, do not require a previously installed OS. They do however check to make sure the machine is an actual Apple machine that is able to run it. This means that if you screw up your drive or have it formatted, you don't have to reinstall OSX 10.whatever then install Leopard. You can just install Leopard.

Will apple sell you an OSless machine? Of course not- the cost of developing their OS software is amortized across the sales of future Mac hardware sales and not just upgrade sales.

several things wrong with those questions
1) The Leopard Install DVD contains the full OS. You can use it to upgrade from Tiger, or you can have it format the whole drive and do a fresh install
2) If you "buy a license" from someone, you still need to have the DVD. I am actually not sure how they determine the license usage, because at no point during the install are you asked to "Activate" the OS, like Windows does. I bought a 5-pack of iWork 08 and installed it on 3 machines so far, and none of them asked for activation. I assume that's happening in the background, and if I try to install it on a 6th machine I will get an error. Actually - i need to find out about that. I installed it on my Mac, then reinstalled Tiger a couple months ago, and reinstalled iWork 08. i need to find out if installing it twice on the same machine burned two licenses.....
3) you can't buy OSless machines from Apple. Any machine you buy from apple starting on Friday will have Leopard reinstalled on it. There's no way around that.

^no, it reports back home to apple, but it only sends your mac's serial number and stuff to them. they have no way of knowing if you've bought a license for it or not.

nice - that's a lot easier than Windows Activation, "if you upgrade more than 2 components it counts as a new computer" or whatever bullshit.
