Here in rocky mount our KBDI (drought index) was almost maxed out.
With all the rain we had it dropped our KBDI to 460 (out of 800) and that's still dry enough to have problems with ground fire. Last year's spring fire season wasn't even as dry as it is now.

We did a site prep burn before we had this current burn ban. It was drizzling that day, the wind was low, and the humidity was around 65%.
Typically you can't get anything to burn with 60% humidity, but when we lit it off the whole thing went crazy and burned everything down to bare soil and even spotted over our firelines...it was a good burn.
Just cause we got rain doesn't mean everything's fixed.

no, see, up here in boone, it didn't just rain. it fucking poured for three days, misted for a day, then fucking poured for three more days. we had to let our firewood sit in the sun most of the afternoon just to get it dry enough to light. yeah yeah, off the hill severe drought and all, but not up here on the hill.

State wide means THE ENTIRE STATE. Just because you think you know enough about the condition of the entire mountain region and state because your firewood was wet (you should cover it up too), does not give you the credentials to think that the Forest Service and weater centers don't know what they're talking about when they implement bans saying you CAN'T burn ANYWHERE IN THE STATE. If you think that some rain is the only factor in lowering fire risk, you seriously need some forest ecology education.

Think about this: You set the woods on fire in the mountains. Because you think the risk is low because of the rain and are wrong, the whole area burns. Then, like in CA, it spreads and becomes a wildfire, then it sweeps down the mountain and moves into the drier areas... then you have a wildfire posing an issue to the rest of the state.
I'm not claiming to be a forestry guru, and sure, I don't know everything when it comes to forestry, forest ecology, or even weather... but I don't see what is so hard about this concept.

DURING A BURN BAN you can STILL use fires, for the purposes of cooking or warming food, as long as they are within 100 feet of a dwelling and either in an enclosure, aka fireplace/grill, or are under observation with prior site prep. Our local scout camporee was fine being able to do our normal bonfire at the end of camp, but then we have a prepped area for it backed by a lake with Indian pumps on hand in case it somehow jumps 50 feet across an open area with bare ground, from its pit with rock walls.

I've cut a deal with the Fire Marshal through the Fire Chief to help raise awareness on my campus in lieu of a fine

I'm very pleased with the deal because I get to engage in an act of philanthropy, help to educate my peers and avoid having to pay a crippling fine

Everyone hates burn bans.
The governor wants to keep the ban because he doesn't want us using water to suppress fires that escape.
Well you know what? we end up using more water than we normally would cause now we have to put out stupid illegal burns.
It's also a pain in the ass to show up to court only to find out the guy you gave a ticket to didn't show up.
It's a pain in the ass for the violator because the court always screws up the dates. All too often the magistrate ends up just letting the guy go. Why should we enforce a burn ban if the courts won't enforce our citations?
