none of the other binary search options work nearly as well, since UNS queue's straight from their own servers. 11/2/2007 4:34:58 AM |

Is Newzbin a program also, or just a binary website search? (I just saw the website).
The thing I like about NewsLeecher is that (with the help of Mr. Nachó), it takes care of everything automatically: searching, selecting, downloading, error correcting, extracting, and cleanup. That's just sexy.
The search has been pretty good so far I think - how is Newzbin better? 11/2/2007 6:27:56 AM |

newzbin is driven by the community and is NOT a program... it's a website. people upload nzb's there (similar to torrent files) of stuff that's already on usenet that you could search/browse yourself. it just makes it easier to view what's actually out there. 11/2/2007 7:10:46 AM |

newzbin premium credit is like 2 bucks/month, so i usually just find myself topping-up when it comes time, rather than weening myself off and using supersearch exclusively.
pretty much just displays the information in a more organized fashion ie. hovering over .nfos to read them as well as comments and getting alerts/emails when something is posted matching your search string.
i started using newzbin when i refused to pay for newsleecher. warez versions either didn't support supersearch, or it died about a week after the version was released.

Just curious why you say that. I've tried most all the programs out there. I don't see any features that newsleecher doesn't have, but newsleecher has two things that no other program that I know of has. Firstly it has a built in newsgroup indexer called Supersearch. You said the Usenetserver's web search is AMAZING, well I would agree with you if I had never used Supersearch. Instead of taking 30 seconds to create an nzb file that you have to download and import into your program, you do your search from within newsleecher itself, click on the results and it starts downloading. It saves about 29 of the 30 seconds that the web search takes.
Newsleecher also has a relatively new feature called Repair and Extract. I see where newsbin Pro has a rar manager which keeps track of the rar sets you download for you, well newsleecher takes it one step further. It uses the par files as well. When set up properly, you can have it queue up the rars, queue up the pars in a paused state, download the rars and analyze them to see if they need repairing. If par files are needed, the program automatically unpauses only the needed pars, downloads them, repairs the set, deletes the unneeded pars from the queue, extracts the rar set to your hard drive, and then deletes all the rars and pars from your HDD, leaving you with only the files you want.
So with the combination of the two features, if I want to download a show all I do is click on supersearch, type the name of the show, click on one of the rars I want to download, do a Ctrl+S and Space bar (Smart select and download) and newsleecher does the rest. 10 minutes later the show is on my Hard Drive ready to watch.
So I really am curious why you say that newsbin (and I assume that's what you meant instead of newzbin since they're not really comparable) is better than newsleecher. When I tried them both I didn't think there were too many differences. The supersearch is what swayed me towards newsleecher, then they went and added the Repair and Extract feature, so now it's not even a contest as to which one is better, IMO.]11/2/2007 2:34:28 PM |

what do people use on the mac as a client? I was using IGrabNews but it died with the leopard install (and doesn't appear to have active development). I have tried NZBDrop (meh) and Unison (seems ok) but was curious if anyone had any other suggestions. 11/4/2007 10:05:58 AM |

OK, they got the credit card system problems fixed, so I was able to charge up my account.
For the really large downloads (>100 files) I've found that the SuperSearch doesn't always have the smartest "SmartSelect" and will only select part of the files. Because all of the NewzBin items are added by hand, you have a better chance of getting the entire archive without needing to do some advanced filtering and stuff.
Another thing I like about NB is that it simplifies your search results. SuperSearch will show you individual files in the results, whereas in NB it shows you the top level archive, with an option to download it immediately (in the form of a NZB file) or you can click on it and see the same files that SS shows you from the beginning.
I took a couple of screenshots to show my comparison. I searched "the sopranos dvd" just for the hell of it and because it was broken up into a bunch of files. (PS, Season 1 is on Comcast's OnDemand and in HD ) In NewsLeecher with SuperSearch, here's what it showed me before and after a SmartSelect. Notice that it grabbed 180 items totaling 6.2 GB, but that there are only 97 items in the archive on a single layer DVD at 4.7 GB.
In NewzBin, I found the same item quite easily without having to sort through cryptic search results. I can easily click on the green arrow next to the listing and download all files in the archive, or I can click on it to get more information. In the detailed view, all of the files are there and are in sequential order. For large archives like this, I

Hmm... that does look pretty neat. I'll probably stick with Supersearch just because it's what I'm used to and the cryptic search results don't bother me. But that does look easier. 12/2/2007 1:39:14 PM |

heh, once you go with NB you'll be hooked. I tried not re-upping my premium credits, but after a year of having all of that info I lasted about 2 days trying to just use supersearch. Imo, it's well worth the couple bucks every few weeks.
you can also search Usenet(Raw) and Usenet(Condensed) so it's pretty much like supersearch in that respect as well.

I was just about to reactivate my newshosting account but 13/mo seems nicer. newsgroups are very nice for getting 360 games and hd movies. it's nice having a constant 1mb/s download instead of maybe 500k/s on a torrent. 12/2/2007 5:35:12 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
Plus, I don't see how anybody feels safe downloading pirated things over torrents these days. I think that's just asking to get in trouble.
Maybe I am being naive, but I really do think that getting caught downloading something over usenet is next to impossible to track. At the very least you're a) not uploading anything and b) not "out there" connecting to 100s of other people and broadcasting to the entire world what you're downloading.
I guess I shouldn't complain, but I never understood how torrents became so popular when newsgroups are superior to them in almost every single way. At least, all the ways that count to me. 12/2/2007 5:45:32 PM |
