Why is it automatically related to the South and the Civil War and slavery and all that jazz? The noose was used LONG BEFORE THOSE TIMES!!!! After beheading calmed down some, hanging quickly took over. I just don't understand WHY it has to be thought of in a "racial" way...

do you even know what the term "symbol" means? look, its really simple. after the civil war whites didnt wanna give up their social/economic higher status, so for the next 50 years or so they used the noose and the lynchings as a means to keep the black son the bottom rung of the ladder. these lynchings would turn into all day parties with people form all ovber the county bringing their picnic baskets as to watch the torture and murder of someone who never went to trial and in some cases even the "victim" claimed they did nothing wrong. After they were dead, the poeple would run up to the body to collect mementos by cutting off fingers toes or ears. Picturse were taken and plastered all over the newspapers and everyone had a huge party cuz the evil black man was put back in his rightful place.

if you dont think that is a pretty harsh memory and would probably still be a touchy subject to some poeple today then let me borrow your cat for a day and see how you feel.
