oops. i must have had a brain fart. i should have put Harvard/Yale in the post for best overall rivalries. not many college football fans have seen an actual Harvard/Yale game, but they know how big the rivalry is and all of the pranks that have transpired over the years. 12/13/2007 10:32:00 PM |

well actually what i meant to say was throw out their current records. i saw that i typed too fast and hoped no one would catch that. think about all the times we were favored and ended up losing. 12/14/2007 1:01:33 AM |

that OSU / Michigan documentary on HBO was pretty fucking awesome. I watched it like three times. Granted, I'm from Ohio and mom went to OSU, but still... 12/14/2007 3:24:52 PM |

^I don't think anyone can possibly understand just how big that rivalry is till you actually go to one of the games.
Craziest fucking environment I have ever been in or around for a sporting event. Most college rivalries are very competitive but are still somewhat fun and civil as far as the fans go.
OSU Michigan is just straight up hatred. 12/14/2007 3:27:21 PM |

Put it this way. At the OSU/Michigan game back on 2000, during the walk to the game from tailgaiting, no less than 5 brawls were being broken up by police. There was just constant shit talking from fans to each other. And then after we lost, a full force riot broke out that night in a few of he neighborhoods around campus where some big parties were being held. multiple cars were flipped and set on fire, kegs were being thrown off balconies at cops, couches were being drug off of porches and lit on fire in the streets. The swat teams in riot gear, armored cars and on horse back had to come in and tear gas the entire area and were doing crowd control with rubber bullets, knee knockers and mace. The shit made CNN the next day it was so bad.
And please don't try and compare an NCSU/UNC rivalry to OSU Michigan. They are nowhere near the same level.

Here is an article about riots after the 2002 OSU Michigan game. I searched for something on the 2000 game when OSU lost, and couldn't find anything. And keep in mind, OSU won the 2002 game, and this is still what happened after.

Quote : | "What: Riot following The Ohio State University vs. Michigan football game Where: The Ohio State University Campus in Columbus, Ohio When: November 23, 2002
I awoke to the sound of The Ohio State University fight song on a crisp Saturday morning at my brother’s 12-bedroom house in the middle of campus on 14th street. I knew that today was going to be the biggest game of the year. It was a situation Ohio State had been in before, entering the last game of the year undefeated against Michigan, the same situation in which Ohio State invariably manages to screw everything up. But not in the 2002 football season. After a long morning of drinking copious amounts of alcoholic beverages and eating scrambled eggs with friends and family we wobbled down to tailgate on Lane Avenue outside the stadium. Half of us were lucky enough to get tickets but unfortunately I was not one of them. Nevertheless I watched the game from one of the parking lots where they had stages set up for bands and three 40-foot screen televisions and continued on with my morning binge. The Ohio State Buckeyes were victorious and now had a perfect 13-0 season. I turned to my friend from out of town that did not understand the gravity of the situation and told him that tonight the streets would be in total chaos.
After the stadium emptied, campus was cluttered with screaming fans. For the most part everyone was well behaved and by around 7:00 that night campus was actually extremely quiet as the fatigued revelers were passed out or taking naps. At around 10:30 we awoke from our slumber still drunk with victory and booze and continued on with our celebratory victory with more beer and liquor. Every house on campus was throwing parties that spilled over into the streets. It was just a matter of time before everything got out of hand.
Police officers and firefighters were gathering in the alleyways in preparation for the chaos. Standing outside on our porch I observed a vehicle turn down 14th slowly making its way down the street waiting for the party goers to move out of the way. One fateful mistake the driver made was that he honked his horn. In a matter of seconds the windshield was smashed in with a rock and the driver passenger was pulled out of the car and beat. I could not believe what was going on. The two managed to run away leaving their car in the middle of the street. By now there were half dozen students rocking the car back and forth until it smashed into another car as it rolled over. I looked over at my buddy and told him that it had begun. One car after another was being flipped over all down the street. Fortunately all of our cars were parked off campus for we were no strangers to what crazy Ohio State fans do after a big game. BURN BABY BURN!From our porch some of us decided to go onto the third story roof where there is a much better field of view. By the time we got on the roof there were two cars already set ablaze and people chanting around it like some primitive fire-worshippers. Firefighters and police officers stayed in place at the end of the street and let the cars burn. After about an hour there were no more cars to flip over so people started to bring furniture out into the streets for firewood. After that I guess the police had just about enough and came in with riot gear. Dozens of tear gas canisters were fired into the crowd and thousands ran in each direction to avoid the noxious gases. The crowd merged over onto 13th street where there was an equally size mob engaged in the same destructive behavior. Since we could not see as well from our roof we decided to follow the crowd.
My friends and I joined the crowd with 6 packs in hand to observe the once in a lifetime event. Block by block the crowd moved trying to escape the police in riot gear who were having an equally enjoyable time beating students as the students did rioting. The police were not able to contain the raging campus until the wee hours of the morning. As for me, I don’t really remember what actually happened past 2:00 in the morning for I found myself sleeping in the bushes of some house on 11th street covered in beer and my own urine. I walked back to my brother’s house taking in the destruction along the way. Every street was littered with beer cans, destroyed furniture and burned out cars. It kind of reminded me of some of the scenes from the Road Warrior. There was still a strong police and firefighter presence who were all retelling their accounts of what happened. I don’t know who had a better time; the students who rioted or the police officers that fought the students.
