btw, any of you guys do work in NY this year?

they're supposively being more steadfast in enforcing the "10 day rule" (that's not the real name, but what I call it...)

if you work more than 10 8 hour business days in the state of new york over the course of the calendar year, you're required to file state income taxes for new york.. not sure how it works with your state of residence if it's business travel, but it sounds like it'd be a pain in the ass...

i did 13 days, and am just not going to worry about it... but I know some of you were pretty far over that

Should hopefully come close to breaking even. Less my father-in-law screws me with another 1099 again. Then I'm fucked.

Has anyone ever gotten a refund from a state pension plan before? I worked for the state of Georgia for a little less than 2 years (quit this year), and each pay check they would take out a certain percentage for the employee retirement system (this was required and not voluntary). This money was taken out after taxes were already deducted, so tax was already taken care of there....I don't know if this counts as a retirement disbursement or something....do I have to declare this as extra income on my taxes?

Also, they only gave me back a certain percentage of what I contributed....

this is only an issue if either you report it to NYC or your company does - i work in multiple states every year and my company only gets onto me about claiming i worked in a state if it's over 30 days and even then they don't really ever force you to

It sounds like an after tax contribution that wont be taxable. I remember reading something about refunds from state pension plans but cant find the article now. You may want to see if you are going to be issued a 1099R for that income.

Technically if you earn income (work for that income) for even one day you are considered to have taxable income within the state. For example, NFL players have to report income to each state they play in.

"random question, but last year i began paying back my college loans. i started paying in Feb. so i was basically paying the whole year.

I'm assuming the institution I have the loan through is going to send me a tax form so i can report interest i paid and other information right? Cause i'm pretty sure I can file for the Hope eduction credit or whatever that is, plus get money back on interest or something.

I know nothing about this, that's just what i thought i read on turbo tax. i seem to meet the requirements, but i guess ill find out soon."

your adjusted gross must be less than $65k to get any tax benefit for paying student loan interest

Yea their turn around times are pretty goood.. They actually deposit your refund before even really checking the accuracy of your filing, there's been some people who have scammed the gov't because of this (submitting dead peoples tax returns, having refund go to prepaid debit card, etc)

Anyways, I'm going to owe a solid $5K if not more...dammit.

Just to throw this out there, because nobody seems to understand it year after year.

Going up a tax bracket does not mean you suddenly owe more overall.

Tax brackets are tiered, so whatever money you make inside of a certain bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

For example, the 2007 cap on the single filing 10% bracket is $7,825. Your taxes if you made exactly $7,825 would be $782.50. If you made $7,826 (just 1 dollar over, pushing you into the 15% bracket) your taxes do not suddenly change to a total of $1173.90. You pay the $782.50, plus the 15% tax on the extra dollar, so you pay $782.65.

Hope this helps someone stress less about it.

There is a link to the IRS refund cycle chart. I find it hard to believe that anyone got their direct deposit in 4 days. Are you sure you didnt do a refund anticipation loan?

Actually, no refund is paid until the IRS sends acceptance. It is therefore doing some accuracy check. The IRS has created more in-depth review over the past few years due to high level of EIC fraud.

Good. I know last year though it was still very easy to do--or at least the news articles I read about people who were caught doing it made it seem like it was very easy to do. I'm glad to see they've hopefully done something to make it much more difficult though.

Your bank is holding a US Treasury check? The first direct deposits will be Thursday, January 25th, unless the IRS is lying in their publications.

Its just strange thats all. I dont see any deposits go into my bank account until they actually do, not two days in advance, unless the deposit is being held.

2200 total, 1950 federal and 250 state.

I only worked for 4 months at my new full time job, so I dont know if I am getting a bigger refund because my shit isnt optimized or if it is because I am being taxed based on what they project my salary to be in a normal 12 month year, therefore putting part of my income every pay period into a tax bracket that I did not reach. Anyone know if that is how it works?

I see a deposit in my bank as soon as it happens as a pending transaction with no date, then it gets moved to the cleared section once it is cleared.

Like with my paycheck, I see it a day or two in advance as a pending deposit.

I am doing turbo tax when I get the forms and will use the deduction help from gas, school, etc to maybe get a little more. Still waiting on my damons form. I dont even know how much they took out in the 3 months I worked there... need this back before spring breaky.

Do you end up owing once you make good money or what? I have always made less than 30K and always gotten money back. Just a question?

If you get a job making "good money" but they still tax you as if you were making less then you'll owe.

I filled out my taxes and owe federal $141 (I get a $1 state refund, ha!) but I have a question:

I donated a car to charity last year (it was a junker and was only worth around $350), but when I plug that into a tax form (taxslayer) as an itemized deduction, my refund doesnt change and I still owe $141. When I force taxslayer to itemize my deductions it says I owe $560. What is the point of donating something to charity of it doesnt even help me come tax time?

am I doing something wrong?

^^^your itemized dedutions have to add up to more than the standard for it to be of any benefit.

Well if you don't donate or write off more than the standard deduction, than those little things won't change your refund at all.

^yeah, what he said too.

k so I have the easy W2. for federal is says something like 271. on the bottom of the form it says if you have a number under box 9 that is what the IRS owes you. Is that correct? They also took out 151 with my state return. What should I do if I want thismoney before February 29th??? Also last year I did turbo tax and got it in like 2 weeks. Should I do that again?
