i just spent 3 days at an international conference with uber smart people (even saw the creator of "dolly" the sheep!), and i walked around with an eyebrow barbell and my tongue ring the whole time. it didn't appear to phase anyone. in fact, i had several great conversations.

i made a point to cover the raving rabbid cartoon though.

honestly, i'm sure they've seen "worse." most, if not all, have had graduate students of their own.

and like several people have been trying to point out to you- not everyone agrees with what you believe to be trashy.

Academics all have enough issues of their own that they aren't as likely as the general population to bitch about your appearance.

I've walked around campus with red hair and not gotten any strange looks, but go to wally world and you'd think you have a third eye.

And like I have been trying to point out to you, just because you think something isnt trashy, doesnt mean that most of the people around you feel the same way just because you think that way about it.

It all depends on the situation you are in. Some places you are going to look like total trash to most of those around you, other places you might fit right in. Not saying the piercings are wrong, as I stated in this thread, I love girls with piercings, but that doesn't change the fact that they are in fact trashy.

Ok so you say they look trashy some places and not trashy other places, so therefore it's trashy to society because in SOME places it's trashy? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Go all tatted and pierced up to a retirement home, and you are gonna look like trash. Go to a ballet like that, and you will look like trash. Go to a porn convention, a college campus, or a tattoo parlor, and you won't. If you can't understand in certain situations things look trashy to people, and in others they don't come across as trashy you are a fucking idiot.

Overall, they are going to be trashy to more people than not. Hell, some people are into cannabalism, and there are societies into that. Does that mean its ok all the time to everyone? NO, cannabalism is wrong.

But how can it be wrong? Some people like it so there is no way we can say its wrong.
