ok first i'm gonna defend dachshunds. I've had 3 and never experienced anything like this. One lived to be 14 and he was never crated, had the house to himself and he never shit anywhere inside. Our two we have now just turned 3...we crate them during the days and they'll shit in the house..ehh maybe a couple times a month. i think it just comes with youth.
if you treat your dog like you say you do, which seems fairly well aside from your comments then i would seriously consult a vet. for one, the dog is 10 years old...she may be developing something as her age progresses or already has something that will only get worse without seeking proper medical care.

yeah, i work in public education. my money bin is under construction.
calling the vet is a good step... if it is a behavioral thing, pick up the dog and take it outside if it looks like it is about to shit. it will get the message eventually.1/17/2008 11:40:02 AM |

Have you heard of dog dimensia? I've never heard of it before. And how old are most dogs before they mentally start losing it? I thought 10 was fairly young for a smaller dog.

That's the thing. She's so damn sneaky about it. She'll be sitting on the couch, you'll hear her drink some water, and she'll come back. And 2 seconds later you smell poop and she's hidden it under the couch.

You could get it a doggy diaper until you can afford to take it to the vet. That won't solve the problem, but at least maybe it'll keep your floors clean. 1/17/2008 11:49:51 AM |

have you introduced anything new to her surroundings? New girlfriend, roommate, pets? 1/17/2008 11:51:25 AM |
MeatStick All American 1165 Posts user info edit post |
Does getting full blood work etc seem reasonable, though? If that's seriously what needs to be done, I'll do it, but I just feel like I'm being hosed by my vet when there's a simpler solution.

We moved 2 months ago and got a cat about 2-3 months ago. I'd figure if she was mad about those it'd be when that stuff happened.
I'm coming to the conclusion that her age is starting to be the biggest factor.

^^ if the dog were not a 10 year old dachshund, I would say go get the blood work... as it is, it looks like there may be alot of other issues. 1/17/2008 11:59:31 AM |

You can still pop em and they will look at you like you were just petting them. They arent very smart but are very loving and fun to throw accross the floor. 1/17/2008 2:08:37 PM |

Take a bag of poop to the vet, ask them to check it for worms. $10 to $15 and if you can't afford that then you have problems. 1/17/2008 2:31:44 PM |
MeatStick All American 1165 Posts user info edit post |
Do they let you do that? 1/17/2008 3:11:26 PM |

you can always CALL and find out. and you can CALL and ask about the problem you're having, too. but yes, if you took him/her/it to the vet and they needed to check for worms they'd do a fecal exam. if they can't get a good one while you're there, they just send you home with a nifty container so you can collect on your own. so yes, sometimes they will let you bring in your own poop sample. but like everyone else said, animals don't usually shit where they live (in their crates) and since your dog hasn't been known to do this, something is probably wrong.

If you've taken your dog to that vet before, yes. The vet I worked for did it all the time. Easy money, do it while you are slow and call the person later that day with the results.
If you've never been to that vet before then I wouldn't try it. 1/17/2008 3:23:43 PM |

i stopped reading after this. Your an idiot and an irresponsible pet owner. Getting your dogs teeth done is usually an unnessecary medial treatment to get money out of people, and its expensive. Its usually a couple hundred bucks to get done but you wont take your dog to the vet to see if it has a medical problem 1/17/2008 4:58:44 PM |

OMG, my fiance's dachshund pisses and shits wherever she damn well pleases, which usually happens to correspond to right under my desk. that bitch won't set foot outside if its cold or rainy either1/17/2008 5:05:07 PM |

Usually, yes, but smaller dogs are more prone to have bad teeth, even if you brush them. And if they get an infection, they can die. Please don't give advice or make troll comments unless you actually have a foot to stand on1/17/2008 5:05:37 PM |

Our dachshund never uses the bathroom inside. I can count on one hand the number of times he's done it in the 2 years we've had him. Our min pin on the other hand..... 1/17/2008 5:35:26 PM |

my parents have a dachshund that does whatever the fuck it wants too
my mother brought it to my apartment and it peed on my carpet, i was pretty pissed and i made her put it in a kennel thing i had. i say put it in the kennel when you don't have time to closely supervise it, and if it shits on top of itself, it will have to deal.
i can't understand having something in your house that shits everywhere
guess that's why i like birds, they stay in their damn cage 1/18/2008 4:07:27 AM |

My Scottie is kinda peculiar like this. She's never pooped and then come in the house and done it again. Her thing is she'll just pee every once in a while in spots. The house we're in now has had other dogs and cats here before and the carpet is pretty old. I'm not sure if she's smelling the other animals or what. The poop thing gets me, though. Now that I read this, I've found my post is much less informative. 1/18/2008 7:43:12 AM |

When you get the money, take her to the vet. Do what the vet tells you to do.
Until then, get a carpet steamer. Steam your carpets every other day. Spot clean daily if necessary. 1/18/2008 5:14:42 PM |

ok...so..perhaps some reasonable advice for you:
yes, there is such a thing as doggie dimensia and yes there is medication for it. as far as it's effectiveness i havent seen much, but perhaps the dogs ive seen on have been too far gone when the tx started.
as far as the bloodwork goes, i would say it probably isnt necessary unless she's having other problems. more than likely, they did basic bloodwork (or should have) before knocking her down to have her teeth cleaned.
since you introduced a new cat to the environment, it would be my guess that that is the issue. if you want to try, you can contact molly stone at the wake spca. she's their behavioralist and works alot with animals that have been rescued and have issues.
good luck. 1/19/2008 6:10:33 PM |
