Frankly, my experiences in mom and pop stores have been low-quality shit that's overpriced (not to mention they're usually filled to the brim with the rednecks you all seem to hate in Wal-Mart). I don't care if Wal-Mart shuts down inferior stores, regardless of any down-home attachment some people may have had to them. If mom and pop have the job experience of having successfully run a store, it shouldn't be that hard for them to find a new job. Hell, if they're smart and sell the store instead of going down with the ship, they might even be able to coast to retirement.
It's fucking Wal-Mart, requires no work experience or skill whatsoever, and as such it's unreasonable to expect good pay and benefits.
Hurting this country environmentally? How so? Selling cheap goods releases greenhouse gasses? Edit: Oh, chopping down the trees... if they didn't, a new subdivision would. And I can't buy shit from someone else's neighborhood.

I don't have much research to back it up. I used to work for a mom and pop store, if you have stores that tend to a specific range of items they're likely to be much more knowledgeable on the subject and that is ALWAYS a plus.

Wal-mart is often a savior for small communities in the boonies...they now dont have to travel long distances to get simple items that we take for granted. Wal-mart just runs a very productive business and they do it well.....
As far as treating employees unfairly, i have heard the same....never letting anyone work full time hours so they cant receive health insurance and what not...and that sucks, but they also give these people a job.
i dunno...it's a love hate thing with wal mart...i just hate it cause it's wal mart, but i am not afraid to shop there if i wanna get a dvd for a good price, an air soft gun, fishing gear, fighting fish, spray paint, candy, beef jerky and puffy paint.........damn right i said puffy paint
lowes and food lion do the exact same thing to the mom and pop shops.....no one complains about them

On Smith Street, a 32-year-old woman said she and another woman argued over money. She said when she stepped into the street, the other woman struck her and her dog, "King Gangster." The 32-year-old woman had minor injuries. Medics arrived, but she refused treatment. An officer noted: "King Gangster suffered lacerations to his right leg and paw." Apparently, the woman got upset because hospital medics wouldn't treat King Gangster. "Fuck off," she allegedly told police and medics. "[The woman] refused to secure her extremely large pit bull when asked to by police." She got a ticket for aggravated assault. 1/28/2008 11:43:12 PM

why is WalMart bad? Do you guys ever notice that all of the strange/fucked up news stories that happen are either right in front of Wal-Marts or in their parking lots? The average news watching American has probably seen about 2 hours of Wal Mart in store or parking lot surveillance video footage in their lifetime already. I mean if you could Google search Wal-Mart not for articles on their business but JUST on the shit that goes on in/in front of their stores during the holidays.............. 1/29/2008 8:28:14 AM

I don't hate Walmart stores... meaning the building, what they sell, and prices. For stuff like deodorant and Bounty paper towels I don't give a shit what store it comes from and Walmart is usually cheapest.
I hate the FUCKING SHITBAG PEOPLE who are in the store - employees and customers. They're either fat, Garner-style, Golden Corral loving, whole milk & bologna eaters or nappy headed, loud mouthed, rude, rent-to-owners.
I'll pay many % more not to have to encounter the lower levels of Southern society.
Plus, Target usually has at least one register being run by a mildy doable chick. 1/29/2008 9:06:00 AM

Granted WalMart has gotten better about this BUT
when I was a kid, the WalMart in Garner ALWAYS had shit stacked in the aisles. Like you couldn't just walk through there without being stuck behind a cart. It was aisle endcap, 3 feet exactly, then a stack of stuff in the middle. Target seems more spread out and that is what is nice when you go inside. Like I said WallyWorld has figured this out lately. Kmart just has shitty fixtures to begin with. 1/29/2008 9:15:50 AM

Way to spew out what some news anchor said without processing it.
So what if they shut down mom and pop stores? They do it cheaper and better. Should we keep everyone in business because they do a slightly worse job?
If Employees are getting treated poorly, get a new job. I know they aren't the most qualified people in the world, but I'm sure to go work at a grocery store, target, or some other retail store really doesn't require much higher qualifications. 1/29/2008 9:20:47 AM

dnl: walmarts are generally frowned upon by a lot of people because one of the big reasons that they are able to give cheap prices is because of all the tax incentives they pretty much DEMAND from local governments. walmart strip malls are big time as far as getting other big businesses in town (see fuquay varina). now, lots of the time, the state/local governments give tax packages to big businesses to move into town, because walmart tells them "fine, don't give it to us, we'll just go to the next town" - so they end up not paying property taxes, or end up not paying sales taxes (even though you're still charged them)
there have been case studies (i'll see if i can find any off the top of my head) where mom and pops stores werent beat out because of the prices. in some cases, the prices were actually lower at the mom and pop places and they had decent business, but they still werent making the profits that walmart / REI / home depot, etc were (because of the tax breaks)
to me, its one of those things where you cant win either way. i mean one side says WHY THE FUCK would they give one of the richest guys ever free taxes... and why don't they pass those savings to the employees? i mean think about what wal mart people probably make ($7.50?)... even with no taxes i bet those people are hurting like hell right now. the other side says well some places need the economic boost that walmart and the outparcels and strip malls bring. tough stuff.
thats just one of the many reasons people dont like wal-mart, thats my contribution ![](images/smile.gif)
ps i use target, but mainly cause its closer. im sure they get similar breaks in different areas 1/29/2008 9:21:11 AM

I agree, (with JRB jackleg posted while I was typing this is an edit) unless there is no other job where you live. Thats the problem.
Walmart in our area is actually irrelevant. You have infinite shopping choices and employment options.
is WHEN they ELIMINATE other choices that there is a problem.
we are get soapboxy in chit chat lol- this is a debate for the ages, the WalMart America
