It's way too easy in places, and way too hard in others. There's not the same amount of fun/challenge as in the first two. Technically speaking, the hammer-ons and pull-offs were too hard to execute in GH and too easy in GH3, but just right feel-wise in GH2.
There aren't enough fun "big riff" songs in GH3, and the game makes songs that are easy to play on a real guitar incredibly complex for no reason. I didn't like the odd transcriptions of songs like "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Search & Destroy" in GH2, but I hated all of them in GH3.
Finally, I used a pick with great success in GH and GH2 because it made playing feel more natural as someone who's played guitar since 1996...because of the strum recognition in GH3, I had to abandon the pick and it sucked what was left of the fun out of the game for me. 5/19/2008 6:23:12 PM |

Well there you go.
I agree about the hammer-ons and pull-offs. I don't think I ever completed a successful run in GH without trying to strum every note.
Whereas I thought there was no way I should have hit some the runs I did in GHIII.

First Game Ever in the Guitar Hero® Franchise to Allow In-Game Downloadable Content on Wii
Santa Monica, CA – May 22, 2008 – When the house lights go down this fall, a new generation of axe shredders, drummers and fearless frontmen will come together and rock with Activision, Inc.’s (Nasdaq: ATVI <http://www.activision.com/> ) Guitar Hero® World Tour. The latest installment from the #1 best-selling video game franchise of 2007, Guitar Hero World Tour will transform music gaming by marrying Guitar Hero’s® exhilarating guitar gameplay, with a cooperative band experience that combines the most advanced wireless instruments with revolutionary new online and offline gameplay modes. The game will feature a slick newly redesigned guitar, a genuine electronic drum kit and a microphone, as well as an innovative Music Studio music creator that lets players compose, record, edit and share their own rock and roll anthems, along with online Band Career and 8-player “Battle of the Bands.”
Delivering the largest on-disc set list in a music-rhythm game to-date, Guitar Hero World Tour is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest classic and modern rock bands of all-time including Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Sublime and many more. Additionally, the game will offer significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles. Budding rock stars will also be given creative license to fully customize everything from their characters’ appearance and instruments to their band’s logo and album covers.
In addition to a newly designed more responsive guitar controller and microphone, Guitar Hero World Tour will deliver the most realistic drum experience ever in a video game with an authentic electronic drum kit. Featuring three drum pads, two raised cymbals and a bass kick pedal, the drum controller combines larger and quieter, velocity-sensitive drum heads with soft rubber construction to deliver authentic bounce back and is easy to set up, move, break down and store.
“Guitar Hero has set the standard for music-based gaming and with Guitar Hero World Tour and the game’s groundbreaking Music Studio, we are once again delivering unprecedented innovation that has the potential to revolutionize consumer generated music, much in the same way that video sharing hubs have driven user generated video,” said Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing for RedOctane. “With the introduction of our advanced high-quality new wireless instruments, in-depth customization options and advanced online functionality, the game enables music fans and gamers globally to share in the most social and expressive music experience ever.”
Guitar Hero World Tour delivers more ways to play than ever before. Virtual musicians can live out their rock and roll fantasies by playing either a single instrument, or any combination of instruments, in addition to the full band experience. In addition to all of the online gameplay modes from Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero World Tour introduces Battle of the Bands mode which allows eight players to join online and challenge each other band-to-band to determine who is the best of the best. In the Band modes, up to four players can jam together, online or off, as they progress through the game, and in single-player Career Mode, players can jam on any of the instruments in branching venue progression enabling them to rock out in the order of their choice.
The game’s innovative new Music Studio lets players express their musical creativity by giving them access to a full compliment of tools to create digital music from scratch, utilizing all of the instruments, and then play their compositions in the game. Music creators will also be able to share their recordings with their friends online through GHTunes™ where other gamers can download their unique compositions and play them.
Guitar Hero World Tour is being developed by Neversoft Entertainment for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. I really think they should have made this compatible with Rock band instruments...they are going to lose a lot of market because so many people already have Rock Band stuff.
If GHIV would work with the stuff, I would definitely buy the game. But since it will not, I will not be purchasing it.
Nothing, not master recordings, not a song writing feature, just nothing will convince me to drop another $170 or so for another giant set of instruments

i played this game for the first time this weekend even though ive seen it played a lot, (it was ghIII) and I really didnt like it. Im sure I would get used to it, and I only tried 2 songs, but it wasnt as intuitive as I thought it would be for someone who plays guitar. I know lots of people who play guitar and love this game (like my other guitar player who is the best GH player ive seen haha), so im not trying to work off that angle, but I was disappointed. the notes they wanted me to play seemed counter-intuitive at times to the actual rhythm of the guitar in the songs I played (ie randomly following the vocal or drum melody for a few notes instead of the guitar melody, especially on choruses) 6/3/2008 8:52:03 AM |

looks like i am going against the general vote on this one, but i'm going to have to say i like guitar hero II and III better than rock band. Even when the take the loud, horse-walking-on-asphalt drums out of the equation, the feel for rock band is not the same as GH. And, not to mention, the songs on RB suck ass. i'm not able to download new songs, which is bullshit, so, i'm stuck with whats on the CD, and it sucks.
GH II > GH III >>> RB
however, i also will not be buying the drumset for GH IV. Like others have said, i already feel like a dork for buying toy instruments for RB in the first place.

anyways, the songs that come on the game is what i'm stuck with. with that said, the songs are better on the GH lineup than the RB list, imho. 6/3/2008 11:29:09 AM |

i just don't know why they can't put the songs that are available for download on a CD and let me buy it. I know its all about money, but the people that have XBL will continue to stay on it, and the people that do not have the option would pay money for this CD of songs. Reliable game journalists have stated that the game will include additional songs from several other performers. A preview by Game Informer suggests that Dream Theater may be included as well.[7] A leak from a market research firm also mentioned that the game would feature Tool and Korn.[47] A video demonstrating motion capture for the game also featured Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith along with The Police drummer Stewart Copeland commenting on the performance of the prototype drum set.[17] NOFX have also stated at a recent show that their song "Soul Doubt" would be in the game.[48]
Other sources have provided information regarding the inclusion of other songs within the game, though such information has not been confirmed by RedOctane or Activision. Joe Satriani has said that Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2 "have just licensed "Satch Boogie" and "Surfing with the Alien" for upcoming versions, according to an interview with Satriani in Guitar World Magazine. The latter song has since been released as downloadable content for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock,[49] and the former has been confirmed as playable in World Tour. A Tool fansite revealed that Tool's Parabola, Schism, and Vicarious will be present in the game. At the San Diego American Idol Tour concert, a brief trailer of the game was shown with the twelve American Idol finalists playing the game, with the song "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad featured in the background.[50] The Jimi Hendrix estate has sent master tapes of the songs "Foxy Lady" and "Little Wing" to RedOctane for use in the game, but their presence in the final version has not been confirmed.[51] Sammy Hagar has also re-recorded "I Can't Drive 55" for use in the Guitar Hero series.[52]

that article makes me cringe so hard. I have some friends (1 in particular) that nail through the fire and flames on the highest difficulty pretty darn well (and if he played it more than the casual weekend guitar hero binges he had in college he could probably play it perfect). But no one has ever thought "wow thats so awesome you should do this as a career" Maybe the difference is that he is also a phenomenal real guitar player.
Luckily the kid in the article is getting homeschooled, otherwise hed be set up for a huge failboat in life because Id be surprised if being decent at guitar hero could be a big career. If he proves me wrong good for him.
