what a bunch of retards.

It doesnt matter when we leave Iraq, the shit is going to hit the fan as soon as we do. now, 5 years from now, 100 years from now. If you don't understand why, you might want to read a little history. Obama isn't going to do anything, but I'd rather have a president to do nothing of note for 4 years, than to have another Bush in the whitehouse to fuck the world for another 4 years.

Sadly, Obama vs McCain is another "who sucks the least" vote

Good God. It sounds like someone is beating that bitch with a baseball bat. I bet Obama was afraid if he moved his hands from his side he would smack the shit out of her.

he never lived in the middle east and he was never raised muslim. He lived in the United states most of his life. For a few years he lived in Indonesia (check a map, its not in the middle east) where he went to both a catholic and "muslim" school. The school is only referred to as muslim because of the predominance of muslim students.

I hope you're just trolling, but just in case you're truly that misinformed, read up. This whole article takes everything you just said about him and proves it to be false.

Remember kids, not every chain-email is true.

Apparently I am misinformed but to that I have to say I would believe it because I dont like him, I want a Vet as our president, who knows more about war time than someone who lived through it. He knows what soldiers go through and can make good decisions not corporate decisions.

-- Think progress is not exactly an unbiased source and the fact that they believe that they have the moral authority to condemn John McCain on the topic of torture is ludicrous.

If you actually took the time to understand the topic and not just cutting and pasting propaganda that fits with your opinion, then you would know that there is something more to this than John McCain supports water boarding.

-- In no way did he vote in favor of water boarding. The fact that you would try to even state that is laughable on one hand and extremely depressing on the other as it shows that you have no ability to think for yourself.

-- Follows are exerpts concerning Senator McCain's reasoning for voting against:

Quote :
"This necessarily brings us to the question of waterboarding. Administration officials have stated in recent days that this technique is no longer in use, but they have declined to say that it is illegal under current law. I believe that it is clearly illegal and that we should publicly recognize this fact.

In assessing the legality of waterboarding, the Administration has chosen to apply a “shocks the conscience” analysis to its interpretation of the DTA. I stated during the passage of that law that a fair reading of the prohibition on cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment outlaws waterboarding and other extreme techniques. It is, or should be, beyond dispute that waterboarding “shocks the conscience.”

It is also incontestable that waterboarding is outlawed by the Military Commissions Act, and it was the clear intent of Congress to prohibit the practice. The MCA enumerates grave breaches of Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions that constitute offenses under the War Crimes Act. Among these is an explicit prohibition on acts that inflict “serious and non-transitory mental harm,” which the MCA states “need not be prolonged.” Staging a mock execution by inducing the misperception of drowning is a clear violation of this standard. Indeed, during the negotiations, we were personally assured by Administration officials that this language, which applies to all agencies of the U.S. Government, prohibited waterboarding.

It is unfortunate that the reluctance of officials to stand by this straightforward conclusion has produced in the Congress such frustration that we are today debating whether to apply a military field manual to non-military intelligence activities. It would be far better, I believe, for the Administration to state forthrightly what is clear in current law – that anyone who engages in waterboarding, on behalf of any U.S. government agency, puts himself at risk of criminal prosecution and civil liability.

We have come a long way in the fight against violent extremists, and the road to victory will be longer still. I support a robust offensive to wage and prevail in this struggle. But as we confront those committed to our destruction, it is vital that we never forget that we are, first and foremost, Americans. The laws and values that have built our nation are a source of strength, not weakness, and we will win the war on terror not in spite of devotion to our cherished values, but because we have held fast to them.
"

It sounds to me like McCain is telling the President and the Republicans that he is sick of fucking putting up with the bullshit, that he has passed law after law prohibiting waterboarding. McCain had the balls to introduce "cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment" into the DTA.

Basically, he is arguing that the Administration should man up and give a "good faith interpretation" of the existing law instead of passing another law that will by and large be rendered useless if the Adminstration decides not to follow it.

It's FUCKING disgusting that THink Progress is attempting to make this seem as though McCain is sanctioning torture and if people weren't dumb enough to believe it, it would be really funny.

It's a shame we can't put the "man up" clause into the Constitution, so I'd have to ask then, why wouldn't McCain vote for the Feinstein Amendment, which reads:

SEC. 327. LIMITATION ON INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES.
(a) LIMITATION.—No individual in the custody or under the effective control of an element of the intelligence community or instrumentality thereof, regardless of nationality or physical location, shall be subject to any treatment or technique of interrogation not authorized by the United States Army Field Manual on Human Intelligence Collector Operations.
(b) INSTRUMENTALITY DEFINED.—In this section, the term ‘‘instrumentality’’, with respect to an element of the intelligence community, means a contractor or subcontractor at any tier of the element of the intelligence community.

McCain says that the U.S. cannot torture, engage in cruel treatment, or engage in activities that "shock the conscience," which waterboarding does. If he'd voted yes to this amendment, there would have been no room for the dishonest interpretation of the torture restrictions that the Bush administration has followed. Sure, what the Feinstein Amendment proposes is already in the Army Field Manual, but if people are contending that waterboarding is in any way legal, and you're opposed to that, it's in your best interest to pass a law that clearly defines it as illegal rather than posturing to administration that is almost certain not to give a "good faith interpretation" of anything.

The other problem is that if McCain really is opposed to waterboarding in spite of his vote, we don't know what other enhanced interrogation techniques not covered by the Army Field Manual that he considers to be "shocking to the conscience." This amendment wouldn't just outlaw waterboarding, it would outlaw all of them. The Director of the FBI and Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency have said that the Army Field Manual techniques are sufficient for both the military and the FBI to successfully interrogate detainees, including those who might have critical information that might prevent imminent harm to the United States. But it looks like McCain thinks these techniques aren't enough for the CIA.

Treatment of War Prisoners is a tough topic for him I'm sure because of what he went through as a POW in Vietnam. I would think he would want to restrict some, but keep others that are necessary for interrogation, to get answers.

I don't even know what you are trying to assert here. Last time I checked the Constitution didn't apply to non-US citizens...so please don't start with the 4th or 8th arguments.

As for why he didn't vote, well besides the 42 reasons cited above, McCain believes that the CIA should be allowed to have a set of interrogation techniques which are different from those used by the DoD, as long as those techniques are legal under existing US law. Since he sees no ambiguity in the current law, he decided to vote against the Intelligence Authorization conference report.

Furthermore, if you weren't so busy trying to figure out what you are supposed to think by reading liberal blogs you would know that the language "shocks the conscience" is that of the administration with which he has so adamantly fought with on the subject of torture.
