^ then it isn't adjusted right or it should have been installed in a different area. Mine used to be on the side of the house and stuck over the roof line. I had problems with it going out. When they put the new dish in I had it mounted on a pole up against the house so the wind doesn't affect it as much, I have not had it go out since I got the new dish. Even last night when it was raining like cats and dogs and the wind was kicking. It's all about the install.

i don't have this problem. the only time mine has gone out in 2+ years was in a REALLY bad, REALLY windy storm and the pine trees in the front yard bent over almost 90deg. rain storms, thunderstorms, snow don't bother it.

if yours goes out every time it rains, then something's wrong. it's broken or not installed correctly.

Mine has only gone out once since I've had gotten it over 5 months ago and that was for 5 minutes.

Compared to by TWC box that rebooted every 3 days.

I would cancel sat immediately if I had access to FIOS though.

I got DirecTV about 3 weeks ago, and for the most part, am happy. I couldn't get away from TWC fast enough. However, I'm having a strange problem with certain channels. Channels 5, 11, 247 (TBS-HD), and FX-HD (248) go out at completely random times. I get the 771 error - Searching for signal on satellite In 1 (or 2). I called technical support and they couldn't figure it out. They're sending a technician next weekend. I've tried the reset, unplugging the Sat In cables and switching them... nothing works, the lady told me it's "probably due to the severe winter weather we've had..." the channels will go out when we leave and the DVR is recording certain shows, and when we come back, lo and behold, no show to watch.

does anyone else have this problem?

also, i have a regular receiver in our bedroom, and we don't have these problems there, so i really doubt it's the satellite or "severe winter weather"

i just reset the receiver (for like the dozenth time) and now 11 is coming in (Lost must be watched), but i bet if i channel surf 11 won't come in when i go back to it.... grrr

I bought my parents a new 50 in plasma tv a few weeks ago. I called time warner for them since they are elderly and wouldn't know what to ask for. I got them set up for HD and they were gonna send someone out to get them hooked up. Well I called and spoke to my mom a few days after it was to be installed and she and my dad were all happy saying the picture looked good. well the tv they had before was crap so anything would have been improvement. well today I go to visit them and notice their picture looks like ass. I look behind the tv and the bastard who installed their box had a fricken COAXIAL CABLE hooked from the box to the back of the tv I went stupid. luckily I had bought a HDMI cable just in case a few weeks ago so I was able to get them squared away. who knows how many folks are paying for HD and dont know they aren't really getting it. Time warner can kiss off. I'll stick with direct tv.

haha i'm guessing not many....most people with 50 inch plasma screens bought it themselves, and therefore got twchd cause they knew it'd be the shit...in this case your parents didnt buy the tv or the cable service...not making light of your situation cause thats still fucked up on twc's part...just thought i'd be that nagger that critiques someones post

the HD box that directv sells COMES with an hdmi cable (or is it 2, can't remember), that's dumb they would use a coax for box->tv.

anyway, my problem from 2 months ago was due to the original installers using the existing coax cable that carried twc and hooking it into a splitter. i kept road runner and only dropped the cable service, so that line was doubling up and carrying one feed from the satellite AND broadband. it just couldn't handle it, and since the last guy came and installed new line/got rid of the splitters, i haven't had one problem.

Weird, I thought the coaxial was inactive when in HD mode...maybe thats changed though.

^I just had Dish installed this weekend and Roadrunner installed Tuesday. Dish guy used the coax closest to my TV (of course)...TWC guy tells me the only two coaxs he can find are that one and one going upstairs (a third, also in the living room which is where I wanted to hook up the internet seemed to go nowhere). I didnt want to do the internet upstairs because I have three downstairs Id prefer to just plug in rather than do wireless (Xbox, DVR, and eventual HTPC), so he did the diplexer route similar to what you described. I also felt like it was too much information going through one cable. So far I havent had any real problems, but I havent tried to do any major downloading or anything yet either.

I'm moving into an apt complex that won't allow me to put a dish up so i have to switch from directv to twc. not having sunday ticket is going to suck. I did have problems with my directv cutting out for 1-2 seconds every once in a while though.

in NC that's illegal.. as long as it's not permanently mounted... and assuming that your porch faces the right way you can put one on the porch.

After about a month of DirecTV HD I will tentatively say it's better than TWC. The channel selection is definitely better and the DVR is head and shoulders above TWC Scientific Atlantic shitbox. Picture quality is at least as good, possibly better, but I can't really say for sure since I have no way to A/B them. However, the startup costs are immense in comparison and the fact that they have to run two separate coax lines to your DVR for it to work is just archaic. That usually means they have to drill a hole somewhere in your exterior wall to get the lines in since most people aren't going to have dual coax runs to each room, and their shitty installers won't do a wire fish through your wall.

One thing I will say is that rain fade has definitely been an issue, despite what people have said. I've yet to lose all channels completely, but generally the first thing to go are the local HD channels and other channels can get choppy/blocky during rainstorms. It doesn't last long, and it hasn't been frequent enough to make me consider doing anything about it, but it definitely does happen.

Overall though, I'm pretty satisfied with the switch.

Directv has a single wire multiswitch in limited availability, which means you only need one wire for the DVR. It's something they should have done years ago though. Most installers aren't using them unless you specifically ask before your install date.

Yeah, I tried to get one through them. No go, at least not in Raleigh. I talked to several installers and all them said it wasn't available here yet. And in the places that it is available, its only for people that have 4 or more DVRs. About the only way to get it here is to buy it yourself, from a place like this,

and install it yourself. Although, I'll probably end up going that route if I ever get another DVR for my bedroom or something.

Satellite only goes out when it is raining like hell.

Like a severe thunderstorm. Usually only at the height of it when you should probably be paying attention to the windows not the TV.
