those areas are severe deserts, and they impose some serious construction and operational constraints based on their location alone. Not only are they in remote areas where they would be prime targets for terrorist attack, but they would be subject to all sorts of damage from sandstorms. You can imagine what kind of damage occurs to a mirror or solar cell when you sandblast it.

once other forms of ethanol production are developed and scaled up, I think it will become a viable alternate. Right now it's causing a lot of problems.

^ Do you read the links you put up? The blog quotes McCain as saying he "supports" ethanol, it doesn't say he supports ethanol subsidies. In fact, if you go to the piece where the blogger lifted the quote (an anti-McCain opinion piece, not a news article), the original author makes it clear that John McCain still opposes ethanol subsidies.
