we should probably ban people who are unstable from the right to free speech too since they might say something crazy and slander someone

I doubt cho seung-hui could have killed 32 people with a knife...now I know there will be cases where the guy is so determined he could get a gun in some other way and I'm not suggesting simply preventing the buying of guns is the only answer as there are so many guns out there but looking at the big picture lives could be saved. Virginia tech was not some ghetto with thousands of drug dealers packing heat to counter each other.

this is certainly an interesting argument you propose but lets not forget what the gun essentially is, a tool for seriously hurting other individuals, if you get to the basic logic of things then more of these tools gives more opportunity for any individual to act on his violent thoughts which would obviously result in more danger

I should have figured you or someone else would have missed the point. Let me try and clarify it further:

If you are going to deny a person (any person) the rights and privileges afforded them as a free member of society (for any reason) then they shouldn't be a free person. That is, the question should not be "how do we keep mentally unstable people from getting guns" the question should be "why are we letting mentally unstable people wander free?"
