John Test is gay, he doesnt count.

Can you explain how someones worth equates to actual cash?

As in most corporations someones worth is dependent on their ownership in the company and stock value, which of course fluctuates and has to be sold to acquire. Mostly their "riches" are tied up in assets and arent actually located in a savings account.

Other than that the only shock factor was that it was local, and now makes sense all the Jimmy V stuff is done there.

"He's on the forbes lists... how do people not know this?"

yes, dude, people know he's rich. However, i think most people don't know how rich he is. $8.7B is an unfathomable amount of money for most of us.

^ Goodnight's "value" doesn't have anything to do with the amount of cash he has. SAS is privately owned and he is likely the majority shareholder, so most of his wealth is obviously tied up in SAS stock. He could turn that into cash by selling SAS or going public then cashing out.

His other wealth would be calculated as Assets - Liabilities. So, apparently he owns Prestonwood. Let's say he owes $100M in debt in the loans he took out to buy the land and start construction, but if the whole club is valued at $500M now, then that's a net positive for his personal wealth of $400M.

Then of course whatever other investments he owns, which don't necessarily lead to or imply money-in-the-bank, but theoretically if you add up all his assets (SAS stock + country club + cash + real estate + other investments he has) and take out all the money he owes on any of that, then I guess it would be ~$8.7B. Any cash that he has sitting around in checking or savings accounts earning little to no interest wasted opportunity, as far as he is concerned.

between the site and book royalties, he's definitely made millions.

not Jim goodnight baller, but probably leaps and bounds better off than any state alum (non athlete) within a several year span of his age.<1--

well, he's "accomplished" enough to have bought a Lamborghini around the age of 20 and is now building a theater in his house which "he hopes" to keep <$50k

Youre missing the point. His "value" is directly proportional to the health of the markets his assets reside in. Lets not even cover Real Estate as that market is falling harder than our Basketball team.

Either way I wonder if he can loan me a 20 spot?

i, umm, fail to see how I'm missing the point. I said that "most of his wealth is obviously tied up in SAS stock", and that real estate and Prestonwood (since that was a particular topic of conversation) would be considered "other wealth", which is still true. Regardless of the vast majority of his value is derived from SAS and stock-positions in other companies, a certain portion of his value is bound to be determined by other assets.

regarding goodnight and preston

he is actually the reason why the preston community exists. he owned the land and speadheaded its development (including the golf course and country club). sas employees where able to buy land and build homes when preston was just getting started at a rediculous discount. not sure what kind of stake he has in all the other preston properties (ie all of the commercial development starting at preston corners to where cary parkway and maynard intersect) but i imagine its a decent amount

^ that's amazing - when you think about it, between SAS + the SAS Campus and Prestonwood, Jim Goodnight is almost singlehandedly responsible for the meteoric rise of Cary over the past 20 years! (for good or for bad, i suppose, depending on your view of Cary)

btw, does anyone have access to the National Geographic cover story they did on the NC Piedmont, with a focus on Cary, in the early 90s? I remember when it came out way back then before I knew anything of Cary. I wonder what they said about SAS in that article....

^ yeah, Goodnight spoke at my graduation in Dec 02. He was a good speaker. A bit non-PC, and made some of the higher-ups on the stage behind him (mary anne fox was the chancellor at the time) squirm and had they had to kind of "back out" of some of the things he said. He didn't say anything too bad, really (and i don't remember it very well), but mostly made several slightly off-color remarks about the number of foreigners or non-native english speakers who are in the engineering school now, or the difference in foreign TAs when he was a student in the 70s vs now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my understanding of what the GM at one of the country clubs I work at told me, country clubs are "owned" by their members? So how is Prestonwood owned by Goodnight or is he just the founder?

John Tesh is, in fact, not gay. He is married to the beautiful Connie Selleca, star of Hotel and The Greatest American Hero, among other TV shows and movies:

And Tesh wrote "Roundball Rock," which was the NBA theme on NBC for years. You probably don't watch sports, though, do you?

That's right. It was $3.5M. I remember when we first moved that summer he came over on a whim when I was watching a Mets game and sat down and just had a few beers with us...

and yes he is a tall guy...
