I know/knew the name William Buckley but didn't know much else about him

Kind of like I sort of vaguely recognized Don Imus when that Rutgers shit went down but I didn't know much about him at all until the wonderful media crammed the story down my ears for 2 straight weeks

in fact I think I created an Imus thread when it first happened and I said it was somebody else who said it cause I didn't know who Imus was

McCarthyism is a little before my time, but I think that neither side has put forth much more than opinion at this point in the thread.

That said, its hard to imagine that the USSR didn't have at least a few sympathizers or spies among the lefties. Which party pushed to stop the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam? Was it both? I'm curious, anybody here care to offer an opinion or recollection? It seems that whichever party encouraged retreat would naturally work hand in hand with the USSR which had a vested interest in us being defeated.

Setting aside communist conspiracies for a moment we shouldn't forget that the one War that will never end and has a far greater fiscal and moral cost is the War on the poor. That is the legacy of the new deal democrats. An ever growing federal government coupled with an ever growing subclass of entitlement junkies. The true cost in my estimation is not measurable by the 50 trillion $$$ debt, it is measured by the surprising portion of the American population that actually thinks it is the government's job to provide them with healthcare. How did we get to this point? What happened to fierce independence that launched our nation from the British? Why have we traded enumerated powers for a few freebies from the federal government? Politicians who couldn't see beyond their own power and the next election and a rubber stamp court which was unwilling to read a simple document for what it said. I'd like to think it will get better, but how can I when none of the leaders of this country champion anything but an increased reliance on government. Now most of the time the argument is just about who can make it more efficient, nobody even questions whether the programs should exist to begin with. It's a damn shame.
