There are plenty of women only gyms or gym times that have nothing to do with religion and everything to do with women not wanting guys to stare at them while they use the vagina machine.

don't the majority of women go to the gym so that guys will like to look at their bodies?

a lot of whiny men (if you can even call them that) in this thread. Next you'll be whining about not being able to give birth either.

Yes. Ask the Supreme Court about Mormons and the polygamy controversy. Belief is one thing, practice is another.

No mandate needed. It's not a coincidence that Judeo-Christian ideology is the primary basis for many of our values and systems though.

Exactly why I don't shop at El Walmart anymore. I give respect when shown respect. Don't shit on me and then expect me to give you a hug.

Those values and systems that are based in "judeo-christian" ideology are found in every other ideology.

Most of them aren't there to sweat or build muscle from what I can tell. So probably.

This is kind of a dumb question. You're comparing religious tolerance and respect for women to racism. What if Hitler wanted to use the gym, should we cater to him? And if you want to use a gym where a certain race or gender isn't allowed, there are plenty of country clubs around the country you can join that'll cater to you.

At Harvard university, an educational institution with a very diverse student group, it makes sense to accommodate women and muslims who want a women-only time at the gym. This is not an attack on Christianity, males, or anything your persecution complex convinces you that it's attacking.

I'm arguing that it's a very small compromise to let some muslims and other women use a gym for 6 hours a week without violating their religion or worry about men ogling them, and you're saying that all institutions in the US should conform to your personal views on decency, or they're unconditionally idiots. Which one do you think represents the values that Americans strive to achieve?

Once again, the issue is not their religion, it is that they want to work out in more comfortable clothing without men around.

I don't see why this is such a huge deal. If guys want to work out during those hours, they can hit up one of the other gyms. It's not like EVERY campus gym is closed to them during those hours.

The issue for me isn't so much that the guys have to go somewhere else to workout during those minimal hours. It's that the rights of many were taken away to appease a smaller group for a reason I feel is unjustified.

I feel like I would be equally as displeased if a group of 6 males got all the women shut out of the gym for 6 hours a week because they didn't want to work out in front of girls. Gender has nothing to do with this in my opinion.

How are their rights being taken away? They can still work out and do anything they wanted to do beforehand.

Can they work out at that particular gym? It doesn't matter if it's not a big deal or not, it's still rights being taken away.

That's like saying schools shouldn't be allowed to hold special ed classes for the minority of disabled students because the majority of students could be using the classrooms they're held in at those specific times.

^^ How is it different? The members of the minority get a facility (ONE facility, when there are several available for anyone to use) for X number of hours to accomplish what they need to do.

Because your scenario involves completely denying one group from something that is guaranteed to them. Plus, the learning needs of mentally handicapped children and normal children are vastly different, essentially requiring seperate facilities. There is no need to seperate men and women other than preference of those 6 women.

A more appropriate comparison would be if 96% of the time, all the children were in the same classroom. But for 6 out of 70 hours a week, the mentally disabled children get to kick the normal kids out because they're embarrassed at how much dumber they are. That's not fair at all, is it?

Plus, you compared women to mentally disabled kids. I don't think that's a good start to your argument...

yea retards need special facilities to learn because they have physical defects. Religion is a choice. And one of the principles of this nation is that choice of religion should not have any effect on others.

Now because its a private school the rules are different and its ok to exclude people based on religion, race, or sex. That happens alot in private institutions. But if it were a gym at a publicly funded university, it would be different.

See, I don't give a damn about Curves because that's a private business. They can do whatever they want and if a guy goes there to complain about the women only policy, he should be thoroughly laughed at until he leaves.

I understand that Harvard is a private university, but I don't group the two into the same category just because they're both 'private.' A school should be held to different standards than a business.

Not to offend anyone....but this is fucking stupid. You shouldn't take away other people's right to use something they pay for just so a few people can be more comfortable working out. A more equitable solution would have been to offer to refund the gym fees for anyone (men, women, muslims, wiccans, aztecs...) who didn't want to work out at the gym for whatever reason. Then these women could have gone to a private women's only gym and paid for it themselves in part (or whole considering Harvard ain't cheap) with the refunded money.

But like people said, Harvard is also private so they can do pretty much whatever they like regardless of how dumb it is.

You may not, but the laws governing this country do.

I don't like that many private colleges have banned greek organizations, but it is their right, as much as I may disagree with it.

I, for one, would be pissed if I regularly went to that gym during certain hours every day and then one day found out it was closed for this reason.

I'd be super pissed to not be able to use any part of a gym because 10 women wanted to run on an elliptical, off in the corner somewhere.

I've seen a number of gyms with "women's only" type areas; I don't understand why they can't do that rather than turn an entire gym "women's only".

For God's sake, people. I wasn't saying they were the SAME. I was saying they are both minorities.

[Edited on April 9, 2008 at 4:26 PM. Reason : and it's silly to tell the minority it can't have something because the marority could be using it]

I feel uncomfortable exersizing around homosexual men, which is connected to my Christian religious beliefs. Can we have one gym on campus be exclusive for a short period a few days of the week?
