Yes and no. Having had some cold sores doesn't mean you can't have kids.

Part of why herpes gets a bad rap is because people automatically think 'herpes = genital = skank', forgetting that 2 of 3 Americans over the age of 12 have HSV 1. The rates for genital herpes infection, be it HSV1 or HSV2, are 1 in 5, according to the CDC.

I bet a bunch people in this thread who are either in disbelief or looking down their noses have something and don't even know it.

(also, I seem to remember the 70-75% figure for HPV, not 50%). Fortunately, HIV is rare, and herpes isn't too common. The common ones--save HPV, which isn't too severe--can be easily knocked out by antibiotics.

Still, I don't think people realize how easy it is to get an STD. I can't believe all of these people who never get checked (a lot of the times, there are few or no symptoms).

My entire point was one of caution. I'm not looking down my nose at anyone, though I've never had an STD and have gotten the HPV vaccine (yes, I'm aware it doesn't cover all types). I haven't resorted to chastity to avoid getting an STD, but it seems like some people don't have any common sense when it comes to getting tested or having safe sex.

And if they're willing to go without a condom, they'll eventually catch something that won't be cured by antibiotics. They shouldn't be so laissez-faire about their health.

it doesn't help that in NC's sex-ed they try to scare you away from sex with those shock pictures of penii covered in horribly disfiguring warts. those pics usually come from people with immune disorders and aren't anything like an average case.

so kids don't know what warts/herpes really look like. Then the kids inevitably have pre-marital sex and are unable to recognize STDs in themselves or partners, because the real thing doesn't look like the pictures.

^^^ agreed, but what i'm saying is that regarding "it's even better if you never stick your genitals into some infested fuckhole", there's no way to know what you're getting into (so to speak). I mean, you can make a reasonable assumption in light of what you know about the person's lifestyle, but the attitude some people have of "it's cool, I haven't gotten with any really slutty chicks" is stupid.

A lot of pretty normal, everyday people have STDs--not just crazy barsluts who go home with a different dude every friday and saturday night.

i.e., wrap it up and get tested periodically, but the only real surefire way is to simply avoid boning down. "She doesn't seem like a dirty girl" is awfully ineffective, and if you didn't realize that before, well, here are the numbers to prove it (although I've seen similar numbers for years--I don't think this is really breaking news).

An exgf of mine recently was found to have HPV, which pisses me off. She could have had it before we got together, or she could have gotten it afterwards. There is no real way for me to know. Sadly theres no test for men.

Also monogamous relationships actually perpetuate things like HPV, because you stop using a condom and you have many sexual encounters in which to contract it. If you have a one night stand with a chick with HPV, your odds of getting it from her are low.
