I have done it in open sea (some 15-20 kms from land). No, not with scuba gear on, but on the surface of the water, holding on to the anchor line (the action was of course, under the water)

It was great. After I came, I lowered my snorkeling mask and looked under water to see the semen go away. It looked really cool, and it was visible for quite a while as it stays in clumps.
