It's very safe though if you are betting on your brackets though
Who are you to be able to predict which number one seed is going to get picked off at what time during the tournament
It's like timing the stock market, no one can do it, just get in and ride it out for the long haul, you're going to make money
Sure, if you buy and sell the perfect stocks at the perfect time, you'll make a lot more money than the guy that bought and held stocks for a long time, but no one has been able to do that and no one will ever be able to do that
It is usually ALWAYS safe to pick the number one seeds for your final four, ESPECIALLY this year, you're going to get at least two right
There are MAYBE 6 teams that are capable of winning the national championship this year, 4 of which have number one seeds3/18/2008 10:13:14 AM |

feel like mine is too topheavy (3 1s & 3 2s in the elite 8)
open to any scutiny or well thought out opinions on why team x should beat team y
^i agree...its kind of like last year, where i had what felt like too much chalk, but last year chalk worked out well for the most part...i'm just having a hard time seeing this field of 3s-7s being able to knock out enough 1s & 2s

haha, memphis has hands down the best talent in the country out of any team
though they had a below average strength of schedule, they manhandled pretty much everyone they played, where your texas' stanfords' and pitts all had significant losses
Pitt lost to dayton by a lot Texas got blown out by A&M Stanford got beat by siena and arizona st.
Memphis was 6 point favorites against Tennessee(who's arguably a top 5 team in the country) when they were handed their only loss
I think Memphis and Kansas are clear favorites for the championship considering their talent and their road to the final four
I would say Carolina is a clear favorite but they got a tough ass placement in the east bracket3/18/2008 12:30:00 PM |

They manhandled every one they played because they had an easy schedule. Pitt's loss to Dayton was in December, Stanford's loss to Siena was in November and their loss to Arizona St. (who was most likely the last team out of the tournament) was by four in overtime, and A&M is a tournament team.
Those are pretty weak arguments against those schools; any of them have a more than legitimate shot at knocking off Memphis. Calipari always has a super talented team and they always shit a brick in the tournament because they play cupcakes all year. This is definitely his best squad yet, but I'll never trust him as a safe pick until he actually does something other than lose in the Sweet 16.3/18/2008 12:43:33 PM |

momentem MIGHT be a 1/2 point difference
Vegas could go ahead and put a spread on that game and feel confident in it and the only way it would change is if people started heavily betting on one team, or injury
The only advantage texas would have is that the game is in Houston, even so Memphis would still be favorites which means Vegas is putting all of THEIR money on the fact that memphis will win, its their job to pick who will win and lose, thats what they do for a living3/18/2008 1:24:27 PM |

their job is to predict a margin of victory that half of all bettors agree with and half don't and make their money off the juice
and they wouldn't have texas as that big of a dog b/c that would lead to too much money on the horns3/18/2008 1:31:11 PM |

haha, thats excatly what i'm saying if vegas has a team at -4, 5, 6 or whatever, that means they are saying that they are going to win the game by 4, 5, 6 or whatever
Vegas would then hope that half the betters go one side and half go the other
That's why my theory on picking brackets is strictly done by vegas lines
Whose to say underdogs wont win against favorites, not me, it happens all the time
Whose to say that i'd even pick the same line that vegas would, not me, ive been wrong before
But i have been sports gambling for 10+ years consistently, so i'm able to predict lines pretty well
And i never make just one bracket, I make multiples to diversify and increase my chances on winning pools
But I do have one bracket each year that I make that I'm always partial to, and thats the one where I go through my head and make lines that i think vegas would make and take the favorite for everygame...and thats the bracket that competes every year for the winner in all my pools3/18/2008 1:37:13 PM |

I was just originally responding to someone saying that it is stupid to take all one seeds in the final four, by saying that though 4 one seeds have never made the final four, it is always a safe bet to take four one seeds, because more times than not, you'll have a more correct final four than the guy that tries to pick an upset or cinderalla team to make it to the final four 3/18/2008 1:48:25 PM |

not saying unc isnt for real. we know that much. but what we don't know is can they play with the big boys. clemson is far from being the "big boy" and even if you use that, clemson had them beat twuce if they hit free throws. That won't be an issue for teams like kansas ucla tennesee. plus they struggled with most of the tournament teams they played (byu davidson) I don't really count duke as "the big boys" either simply because all they do is shoot 3s they don't win by "out talenting" you like the big boys and they split with duke anyway.
So concluding, they haven't played anybody great, and they struggled with the only 4 good teams they played. so all we know is that they can simply do what it takes to win against the average tourney team but what will happen when they play a team on their level?
they haven't played a traditional top ranked team all season. duke is it and they don't even play basketball so i dont hold the win to them nor hold the loss when duke made every three against them because playing duke can't be compared to playing anybody else.
The acc is the best top to bottom but unc is the only really top notch team. 3/18/2008 5:08:35 PM |

compare ncstate virginia and boston college to the teams at the bottom and they would destroy any conference. acc is just full of mediocre teams. no true bad teams. 1 great team. 1 really good team and 3 slightly above average teams. the rest of the acc is standard. 3/18/2008 6:16:45 PM |

Ernie likes to talk about Memphis never getting out of the Sweet 16, when in fact they went to the elite 8 the past 2 years.
Derrick Rose is an amazingly talented freshman point guard. CDR is a first team All American. With Dorsey and Dosier you will never score an easy basket inside in the halfcourt set. Tennessee's running gave Memphis trouble, but nobody runs like Tennessee. Memphis is a lot less likely to get upset on the way to the elite 8 than UCLA or Kansas. 3/18/2008 6:19:46 PM |

I think Purdue is going to be VERY strong the next few years. Anyone look at their roster? Ranked 20th at the end of the season and 2nd in the Big 10.
If you look at the average number of minutes played per game on their roster, 3 of the top 5 are Freshman and the other 2 are sophomores. You have to go 10 deep before you ever see 1 Senior (the only senior on the team) who played any minutes. Out of the 10 that played the most, 4 freshman, 2 sophomores, 3 juniors, 1 senior.

Why is everyone so high on davidson this year. I'm a bit impartial as I love the zags and don't like to see them being picked as such a common upset, but davidson in my opinion isn't really that solid. To start the year I thought they were a pretty quality mid major, dominated their conference and they have had some good games, but what games have they won against good teams? The zags are definitely having an off year but they still have a ton of talent and a damn good coach... I don't see them losing. 3/19/2008 9:06:02 AM |

except they don't have nba talent, they don't have great size and most importantly THEY CAN'T HIT FTs. the ncaa tournament is all about close games and a close game almost guarantees clemson to lose.
AHAHAHAHA
i can't wait to see your sorry ass crying when clemson gets taken out.
I think they have a 50/50 shot at beating nova depending if nova shows up or not, then if they play vandy they are done. If vandy somehow loses first round they will lose to kansas by 15-20. The only way they can advance is if somebody else upsets vandy and kansas.3/19/2008 11:12:31 AM |
