Yes, because the goose was a domesticated pet belonging to someone else. And if it was wild, still yes, for the much more minor charge of hunting without a permit/within city limits/out of season.3/20/2008 8:32:19 PM |

Agreed. It is repulsive. I have come across foie gras tins in supermarkets many times, and every time I have the urge to buy one (I love to try specialty/gourmet/fancy foods), but at the end, my conscience wins out and I resist.3/21/2008 7:36:44 AM |

Why would you have a goose as a pet?? And then paint its toenails?? And geese have toenails?? I didn't know there were toenails on webbed feet...but then again, I've never tried to notice a goose/duck's toenails when I've been close to them. 3/21/2008 10:40:15 AM |

I've heard geese and ducks actually make pretty good pets, they're very social animals. I've also heard that a goose can be trained like a guard dog, but I'm not sure how true that is. 3/21/2008 10:48:13 AM |

on top of that, their past record isn't so hot either.

there's a difference in killing an animal for money, food, clothing, etc versus abusing/torturing an animal to death
Quote : | "Some serial killers display one or more of what are known as the "MacDonald triad" of warning signs in childhood. These are: * Fire starting, or arson invariably for the thrill of destroying things, for gaining attention, or for making the perpetrator feel more powerful. * Cruelty to animals (related to "zoosadism"). Many children may be cruel to animals, such as pulling the legs off spiders, but future serial killers often kill larger animals, like dogs and cats, and frequently for their solitary enjoyment rather than to impress peers. * Bed wetting beyond the age when children normally grow out of such behavior." |

I'm not defending this sort of behavior but have you ever been up close to a goose? They are mean and stupid and hiss at you so they're not necessarily my favorite animal.
And who would have a pet goose and paint its toenails? Sounds like a bunch of freaks who were probably asking to get picked on. 3/26/2008 10:40:06 AM |

I know this will invoke flaming, but just as devil's advocate, is this really that much worse than people that pay to eat a chicken, pig, or cow in the way most are raised killed on factory farms? I figured the owners of a pet Goose would be older, but they look like they are in their late-20's. How strange..

I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the dichotomy in treatment that exists between preferred (pets, aesthetic) animals vs non-preferred (food, ugly, threatening) animals is permanent. At the very least this attitude is not likely to change in several generations. i find the idea of animals receiving equality in treatment (to each other) is especially unlikely as the earth's human population swells and less land must provide more protein.
with that being said, i have a special fondness for birds (yep, i'm biased too) and this story upsets me a little bit. For all the people that said "geese are stupid and mean when you get near them anyway," think about what would happen if a stranger tried to go pick up your pet cat or touch your dog if you weren't around.
I'm pretty sure the animal would react negatively and act aggressively out of fear as well. But, such is the a pet owner takes by leaving their animal outside 24 hours a day without some sort of enclosure to protect the animal. it's pretty impractical to have a goose walking around in your house pooping everywhere but they should have had a shed or pen to put it in at night. a stray dog could have killed it just as easily. I think the negligence of the owners is somewhat to blame, even though the cruelty of the young men is inexcusable. 3/27/2008 7:26:02 AM |

^^ I'm more concered with people's double standard on animal treatment. If you have no feelings about about 10,000 chickens trampling one another to death, being fed minimum levels of inadequate food, then don't get bent out of shape about a goose being beaten to death by a few teens. 3/27/2008 1:41:47 PM |

There's a huge difference between a chicken raised for food who is "slaughtered" in a way approved by the FDA, and a creature who was a pet that was beaten to death by a baseball bat. 3/27/2008 3:46:20 PM |

please. I dont know what PETA pamphlets you've been reading but that's why we have regulations in place for this kind of shit. Don't spew ignorant information. I'm not saying it never happens, but it is not the norm and is why we have regulations in the first place. FDA: http://69.20.19.211/opacom/laws/pltryact.htm for industry and also IACUC for research.
I have no feelings for the chickens that are slaughtered everyday and that we consume other than that they are treated accordingly to the regulations that are in place. I DO feel sorry for the goose that someone took out uneeded agression on. The chicken you or anyone else eat aren't getting beaten with baseball bats and held by the neck outside of a car etc etc.3/28/2008 10:41:26 AM |

^Do you know how rarely an inspector from the USDA, FDA or OSHA actually steps foot in a meatpacking plant??
And even when they are inspected and found doing shit wrong it doesn't matter.
CEO's and those who run the meatpacking plants pay big $ to push legislation that keeps the inspectors out and have little control or say about what happens in the plants. The corporations run the livestock industry. Meat recalls are not mandatory. The majority of ground beef in the US has manure in it along with some lovely pathogens.
regardless of what type of animal this was; goose, dog, cat, rabbit, hog - it was a beloved pet and I feel sorry for the owners. I still say the boys deserve to beat to a pulp with a baseball bat.
plus animals in processing plants are shot with captive bolt guns or shocked/stunned/gassed which while isn't the most pleasant way to die is certainly less painful or traumatic then being beaten to death with a bat. 3/28/2008 10:57:35 AM |

I know at least in the chicken industry there are federal and state inspectors whose job it is to work full time at the plant at different aspects of the assembly line. I don't know if it's different with pork or beef, but I know chicken is done fairly clean having been to numerous plants myself.

Growing up I had a Candian goose as a pet. He got hurt when he was a baby and we nursed him back to health and he just stuck around our house. He'd walk us to the pool and sometimes come inside. We waited til there was a lot of other geese around the pond and let me go mingle every now and then and then one day he just flew off with them and it made us happy All in all he was a nice pet so this article makes me sad. 3/28/2008 4:52:21 PM |
