Pretty late in the game, but having a dad who has had a masters degree in English and written and edited for over 30 years, and a GF as an English major who edits for several professional publications as well, I actually talked to both of them recently about almost this exact thing. (I was working on an engineering writeup for work while referencing some british standards publications, and yes my grammar is terrible hence why I called them)

I asked them separately and they both said that it is both accepted and grammatically fine to add 'the' in front of a publication title as long as it is not formatted or capitalized along with the title. In fact my dad specifically said he always leaves "The" out of the beginning of a title when he is titling a published document in cases where he assumes people will choose to use 'the' in front of the title anyways because at that point he considers it an unnecessary word.

neither adding nor leaving 'the' off when referring to a publication is wrong. However, 3 of the 4 things you listed are magazines which you generally already do not see 'the' added before them very often because of the way magazines are titled. However, instead you hear Time magazine or People magazine even though they are not in the title. You also do not see 'the' added very often(very often being stressed) to a title with action words in them such as "illustrated"

Now, I know you are an English major as well and are going to try and chew me out for arguing since I am not, but my answer is just my rephrasing from what two people told me who are. And they both were pretty straightforward, answered rather quickly so I trusted their advice.

Precisely. If you said Technician newspaper, as you say Time magazine, the "the" would be unnecessary.

One election night I entertained marko on the Witherspoon balcony with conversations about U2 and Bono's sunglasses so the rest of the staff could continue pushing deadline until ~3 a.m.

Then he slept on the design room couch.

RawWulf can be distracted in a similar fashion by hard candies and Matlock episodes.

and I remember leaving the office at 4:30 a.m. on election night 2004. Woke up for an 8 a.m. lab and came right back up to write an update story. Good times.

Tennis balls were my distraction of choice.

And people wonder why the copy editing needs work. Tennis balls flying around the office aren't conducive to concentration.

should have been there when footballs, golf clubs and Wiffle ball bats flew around the room ...

Then there was the smoke machine in the photo studio and Hot Wheels race track spanning the conference table.

Oh, and Cuddles the cock roach living in a coffee pot in the (current) Sports office

And what's the point if you can't have any fun spending 10-12 hours at a time in the office!!
