I want to drop my car about 2". While I'm wasting a weekend I may as well improve on something besides being a ricer. It can ride rough. It already rides rougher than my s2000 by a noticeable amount.

Dear Quinn:
Give up.

"Good handling" takes more than a set of coil overs. Tires make perhaps the biggest difference, wheels are sort of important too. Doing all this to your "I got it for the fuel mileage" car is an idiotic idea. You have an S2000, which is one of THE best handling cars the world has seen, drive that.

^really? an s2000? Any documentation to back that up?

(and no I'm not implying Evo. I would just think that a tail happy car like the s2k would not be the best handling car)

ahmet has a good point, but the s2000 would need more money than the civic is worth to make it handle better.

oh if i lower it , it will get worse gas mileage?

I would have thought lowering the height of the frontal area and minimizing the air underneath would have helped.

i dont know the physics behind it (well i do, but no proof), but if you're just lowering to get more efficient gas mileage, then it might be a waste, you already get like 40mpg. how much more are you looking to get?

i thought you were trying to turn it into some sort of weekend racer.

oh mark, the S2000 is one of the top handling cars out there.

i dont know where you get this tail happy from, ive only driven one that was tail happy and it was because it wasnt stock. and when it was stock, sure as heck wasnt tail happy. well no different than any other car with like 200WHP

I would like a car that gets decent gas mileage and is somewhat fun to drive. I have no problems spending 1000$ to lower the vehicle and improve it. Dude I mean for fucks sake, even with 1000$ its still a 3000$ car. Thats a laughable sum of money for a car.

well for $1000 you can lower the car get a wheel/tire setup, other susp. parts and call it a day.

i know you want to have fun. and i know the kind of power that car has, just slightly below my 350hp.

but you arent going to learn anything without first having fun with a stock car. if you know how it handles now, then you can upgrade the susp. components and understand them.

the only way you'll apply the susp. around these parts is on the round abouts/clover leafs and the oh so many (sarcastic) curvy roads we have around here. and all that isnt legal and cops dont care if your car is slow, they'll bust you bad.

if i was you, i would take your S2K to a few events. maybe throw some springs instead of coilovers on the civic and try to have fun

Mr. Markus Orelius, handling is quite subjective. I'm sure there's no shortage of people/articles claiming the S2000 is one of the best, such as http://images.motortrend.com/features/112_0706_01z+americas_best_handling+spider_web.jpg for example.

It's all relative, according to that magazine the Evo is better than an S2k. I sort of agree with that, but I still like both the Evo and the S2k, but I think we can all agree that a POS Civic w/coil overs is not going to handle better than an S2k. In fact, hopefully you'll see what I mean at the Hype-Ricer fest at VIR in a few months

well by numbers its not.

but couple years i got rolled by a single cam (not sure if he had any mods on it) civic with susp. at VIR.

and im talkin rolled good in the curves.

but the driver was the honda challenge champ (like 2-3 years in a row).

but thats besides the point. although i am a firm believer of keep your fun on the track, im not gonna stop from telling you can can still have fun on the streets and attempt to keep it safe.

For a car that doesn't have AWD, yaw control or even traction control on older models, S2000 is the BEST handling car out there in terms of how connected you feel the road. Maybe exige/elise line is the very top....not sure, haven't driven one yet.

although EVO, by far has the most direct steering.

on the existing maxima there are 2 configurations - with and without sunroof - that appears to be a picture of the model without one - with the sunroof it'll be one piece of glass more than likely

More importantly:

1) the "boomerang" design will not look good on every car.
2) the "boomerang" design can be implemented in many ways (ratios of sizes of various parts of the boomerang), so again, they won't look all as good."

i hope you don't think this "boomerang" design is anything new. in fact, it's 45+ years old.

You know, in all my years of buying Nissans, I've never understood the need both for the Altima and the Maxima.

Then again, I don't know shit about cars.

^ Until 2001 or so, they were VERY different cars marketed to different demographics. When the Altima was redesigned it went upmarket in size, amenities, and performance.

Personally, I miss the 4DSC of the early nineties

^what he said

They ruined the maxima when they started making it a fat pig of a car and the altima taking its place.

^ agreed. i almost bought a 2002 maxima a few years ago but i had a couple of tickets and the insurance was going to be more than i was willing to pay. i really liked that model. this new maxima, while it looks great, resembles the altima too much. it's like they saw the success of the new altima design, the failure of the new (current) maxima design, and adjusted accordingly.

Having owned both, I also agree--the Evo is hands-down the superior of the two in terms of performance, to include handling. They're both a helluva drive, though. I've love to have one of each (along with a Z4 M-coupe, C6 'Vette, and Elise).

With the maxima stepping up like this, i really want to see how Acura is going to respond with the TL and TL-S

Acura's TL is mainly going to respond to how the G35 changes/evolves.

Yes, I know about the FWD/RWD disparity between the TL and G35, but still, what I said is true.

they've really hit the wall in terms of where they can take FWD/higher horsepower and still have it be manageable. take the maxima as an example. it has lots of hp/torque, but the amount of torque steer is insane.

unless they add AWD and make it extremely heavy/not sporting or convert it to RWD (not for a long while, until people stop buying acura's for their high schoolers) it's going to fall by the wayside until they realize that FWD/sporty/luxury does not mix. fwd is for economy cars only. honda still hasn't figured that out. until they do, they aren't raising their status in the entry level luxo world.

can't forget hyundai, who rips off everyone... or wait... it's already been around...

can't forget the s class

last, but not least... it comes FULL CIRCLE with the chrysler sebring, buick lucern, and dodge charger. ironic? i think not!

point being, i always see silly things posted in these threads like "ooh, check out that front" or "wow, cool hood line", or "man, they really did something different this time". car design is dead people. they're just regurgitating what was done years ago. they're all stealing from eachother. sure, they're still coming out with some badass looks by mixing it up a little, but the fact remains that there are VERY few designs around that are 100% original. maybe that's not their fault. maybe there is but only so much you can do with the shape of a car yet still have it pleasing to the eye and we've reached that limit. that's a WHOLE other philosophical and mathematical debate i'm not touching though. it's just like anything else. we advance technologically, but design always comes back around. you see it in clothes, architecture, furniture, etc. i know a lot of it is by choice and the whole "retro" thing that's captured every generation, but i think it's forced to a certain extent.

^^ haha yeah exactly.

he is confused. he is looking at just a partial outline (L-shaped or boomerang-shaped curve on outer sides of the lights) of the headlights in those cars he posted.

he should be looking at the full outline, or the actual shape of the headlight. there are TWO PRONGS/FINGERS jutting out of the main bulk of the maxima headlight. it looks like an ARROWHEAD. where is that in any of the cars he posted?

as i said elsewhere in this thread, that's the only car i know with that design.

but he also said this, in response to me:

Quote :
"i hope you don't think this "boomerang" design is anything new. in fact, it's 45+ years old."

and then he goes and posts a million cars which don't have the boomerang/arrowhead headlight design.

Quote :
"maybe that's not their fault. maybe there is but only so much you can do with the shape of a car yet still have it pleasing to the eye and we've reached that limit. that's a WHOLE other philosophical and mathematical debate i'm not touching though."

this however, is an excellent point, and i have been thinking of posting it for sometime. i will perhaps make a thread later. however, again just to be sure, that doesn't apply to the maxima headlights, as they are UNIQUE.

the only other car i can think of which has 2-pronged headlights (but orientated differently) is the following, and it is not in production yet:

http://www.rsportscars.com/foto/14/lfar08_02.jpg

and taillights as well:
