Quick question.
To get a learner permit, do you need to how up and ride, or do they just give you one.

^^ learner's permit is just a written test, and if i remember correctly, there are a few questions that have kinda dubious answers (like one i remember that deals with which way to turn the bars, say, for a left turn--the answer they want--left--is incorrect for any speed above, ohh, 20 mph or so...)

but whatever, if you have any brains at all, you'll get a passing score on the test.

license involves riding test around cones in a parking lot (i.e., you could pass it and still be completely incompetant to ride a motorcycle, especially with a passenger. tight turns at 10 mph aren't a sportbike's happy place, though.)

A Tuna was my first bike older body style. It took alot of abuse and always ran great. The older ones I think are better looking not so much of a bubble and you can find them somewhat cheap also.

But besides that... The oil is REALLY easy to change.. Its a naked bike so all its private parts are exposed!

make sure the gears shift smoothly. i blew up 2nd gear in a YZF-600 transmission one time (common problem).

A ninja 250 is a great starter bike. I have never heard of anybody that was too big for one. Maybe if you're really friggin huge it might feel cramped. But definietly a lot better than the Rebel. A GS500/550 would be great if you could find one.

If you start on a GSXR, Hayabusa, R6, R1, or any other 600cc+ super-sport, just make sure you fill out your organ donor card. Those are not starter bikes and can almost never be used to their full potential on anything but a track. Especially not legally on the roads.

Btw, if anyone is selling a 250-600cc bike (besides those super sport types I just mentioned), let me know.

i'm actually interested myself in a bike (especially with gas prices getting the way they are).

I weigh about 215lbs, and i'm not looking for something that's gonna make sonic booms, but I also want to be able to make it up avent ferry.

Ideally i'd like to spend under 2g's for the first (learner) bike, which I'm sure will get laid down once or twice- also, at this point, i'd prefer a cruiser style to the crotch rocket

Dual-sports are good to learn on. Try a suzuki drz 400. Aswwesome bikes and tons of aftermarket performance goodies are easily available.

maybe not right at the moment...haven't ridden recently. after a couple of months back on a sportbike, I'm sure I could.

I've owned 3 bikes. The last one was a GSX-R 750. I've probably ridden 15-20 different motorcycles, to include a couple liter class machines. I think the most fun motorcycle I've ever ridden was an R6, and plan to step back down to a 600 for my next bike (at most a "cheater" 600 like a Kaw 636 or a Daytona 675). I very well might get an SV-650 or something for a season just to expedite getting my riding skills back up to speed and do it on the cheap.
