and Rivals has Eric Berry as the 3rd scariest defensive player in the country for this upcoming year... I assume they mean scariest as in "scary to the offense" and not as in "meanest, hardest hitter etc"... but from some of the comments it may be a bit of both... either way, the man is a fucking beast as a sophomore.

woot, got a 4-star RB for next year
Quote : | "It's been no secret that Tampa tailback Jarvis Giles has been leaning toward Tennessee for quite sometime. Friday, he decided to finally put that poorly kept secret to bed by verbally committing to the Vols.
"I'm so happy," Giles said. "It's a weight off my shoulders. The family here is awesome and I'm so glad to be a part of it. Tennessee was my one and only. I'm just pumped; can't wait."
Giles left the door open to possibly committing to Tennessee when VolQuest talked to him earlier in the week. Once he got to see the campus, the town and meet the people, it was all but over.
"I had told everyone that I didn't think I would commit while I was here, but it blew me away," Giles said. "The community is great and they take care of each other. Everyone here is so nice and I'm not just talking about the football people. I'm talking about the people of Knoxville. You don't see that in Florida."
New running backs coach Stan Drayton laid the groundwork for Giles way before he arrived at Tennessee. The relationship between the two was always there, but it blossomed once Drayton defected north from the University of Florida.
"Coach (Stan) Drayton has been on me since my junior year," Giles said. "He was at Florida at the time and once he came to Tennessee, I told him we should talk. I always planned on leaving Florida because I wanted to get away because I believe there are bigger things than Florida.
"Tennessee was the best fit for me. I love it here. It's awesome. I can see myself living here after football is over, building a family here."
Once he arrived on campus earlier this week, Giles became the target of Tennessee commitment Je'Ron Stokes, who has worked every possible Tennessee target that has been within earshot of the Philly wideout.
"Je'Ron is a good guy," Giles said. "We hit it off because we both want the same thing. We both hit home base from ground zero."
Giles now will join his new friend and future teammate on the recruiting trail. He has big plans for the rest of his class and he isn't shy to say he will hit up every available prospect.
"Oh yeah," Giles said. "I'm going to recruit as many players as I can. I'm going to talk to every top recruit I can and see if we can add to this family here at Tennessee. I want my class to be the best class ever. The class of 2009 will work hard and do something special."
Giles spoke often of family during his brief interview on Friday. It's a part of his life that has always been important and he says Tennessee's family atmosphere will make it easier to leave his real family when the time comes.
"My family is very close-knit," Giles said. "Family is all you got and I felt like I could trust everyone here. I won't miss my family as much knowing I'll be here with this family."
Hanging out with other recruits, commitments, players and coaches, Giles is having what he terms an "unbelievable" time. This will make leaving Knoxville difficult.
"I honestly don't want to leave on Sunday," Giles said. "I know I have to go, though. I have unfinished business back in Florida. I want to finish my high school career strong and hopefully be able to enroll at Tennessee in January."
Rivals.com rates Giles as 4-star running back and a member of the Rivals250 for the class of 2009." |

Quote : | " Vols Strike California Gold June 24, 2008
Upland, California quarterback Josh Nunes put a smile on Tennessee offensive coordinator Dave Clawson's face Tuesday evening that might as well have stretched from Tennessee to California. The reason? Nunes has declared he is a Vol.
"He was almost stunned I think," Nunes said of Clawson's reaction. "He was really excited. He was kind of like a kid at Christmas. I felt like I could see him smiling through the phone. It was pretty cool. It's a great feeling to have things done, and I have made a great choice."
It was a choice that the 6-foot-3, 208-pound Nunes said came pretty easily when he sat down with his parents and went through his final eight schools.
"The decision-making has been going on for a couple of weeks," Nunes said. "The last three days I have been thinking real hard about things. We were coming home from camp at Stanford, and the more I talked about things the more I knew Tennessee was the right choice. I have a great relationship with coach Clawson and with coach (Phillip) Fulmer. The program and those guys fit me. It's great to wake up knowing where you are going to school and that you have made the right choice."
According the Nunes, who sports an impressive 4.6 GPA and has a 29 on the ACT, the Vols are the right choice for a lot of reasons (had offers from Harvard and Stanford in addition to more conventional football powers)
"As I said, I am really comfortable with everyone I have met or talked to there," Nunes said. "There are at least 30 reasons why Tennessee is the right fit. It's the SEC and Tennessee is a powerhouse school in the best conference. I am looking forward to playing for a national championship there. Coach Clawson is a really likeable guy. He is one of those guys who is going to get things going. You know he is going to put in the work. He has been on me for a while now about getting out there to see them. I wanted to, but some things have come up to prevent that and he was really understanding about my situation and about the whole process. His understanding of things with me really helped create the comfort level with him."
Nunes is working to try to be in Knoxville in July to see his future home for the first time, but he has a comfort level with the Vols and with Knoxville because of his research.
"I have talked to people and I have done a ton of research," Nunes offered. "I know it can't be a bad place and I know I have made the right choice for me. I can't wait to see it. It's just an unbelievable feeling that really I can't describe. But to have a college home is not just a relief, but it's exciting."
Nunes was impressive recently at the Elite 11 camp in Las Vegas and after attending camp at Stanford, Nunes is done with recruiting and is looking forward to spending time with his teammates and his family.
"I am working really hard with my team and I am focused on spending time with my family this last summer," Nunes said. "My brother (Justin a sophomore) is my backup this year on the varsity team so it is fun going to workouts with him, and we are looking forward to enjoying the year."
And Nunes will work on some recruiting as well.
"We really have it going in recruiting and I will do all I can to help that continue," Nunes said of the Vols' building recruiting momentum.
Rivals.com ranks Nunes as the 10th-best pro-style quarterback in the country and recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree likes what he has seen in the California native.
"There's a reason why he has 30 scholarship offers," Crabtree said. "All the big schools want him. Very accurate ball, nice spin, very good fundamentals. He's a guy that needs to find the right system that fits him and he'll be very successful as a college quarterback."
Nunes found that in Tennessee without ever having stepped foot on campus. " |

Wow I hope he likes what he sees once he visits the campus. I haven't heard of too many players committing to a school without having checked out the campus at least on an unofficial visit. What's his overall rating though? I remember Glennon was ranked the #5 and #3 QB overall by Scout and Rivals respectively. Will he be a guy that can come in and take over the starting spot after a redshirt year? I can't access Scout or Rivals at work. 6/25/2008 2:48:20 PM |

Now that I'm home, I've been able to check out Nunes some. I think he's a pretty good get. He's ranked the 17th best QB on Scout, and it appears he's the 16th best QB on Rivals. He's no Mike Glennon in terms of hype though. I like Nunes' size, but I'm concerned about his speed. A 4.85 40 is something I'm a little concerned about considering the speed of the defenses in the SEC. I like my QBs to have good mobility to them. I mean they don't have to run 4.4 40s but I expect them to be faster than most of the linemen coming at them. Maybe he'll be able to get faster while he's a UT. I watched his highlight vid. It was mainly deep passes where he threw it to a receiver getting behind the DB covering him. I wonder how good he is at throwing slants, button hooks, and other short range passes, especially those where timing is essential. I think he's a good pickup and has promise, but I still want to see him make those kind of throws before I can fully evaluate him. I like the ASU, UF, and OU offers. The BYU offer is a good one from a QB standpoint b/c they are known for needing excellent passers to run their pass happy offense. 6/25/2008 7:26:38 PM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
if the O-line keeps playing like it has been (I think it was 4 sacks allowed last year) and he can work on getting rid of the ball in time a 4.85 will be fine, I dont think either Ainge or Manning could run that.
Checked it, Ainge ran a 5.15 haha.
I really like Nunes arm and smarts, I bet he will go up a lot his senior year in the rankings

Here you go Jaybee.....I took out the stuff on the UCLA kid. This is from Brian Dohn, UCLA's beat writer. UCLA fans seem to like Nunes over Brehaut, but Brehaut accepted his scholly first and that was the last open spot for 09, so they stopped pursuing Nunes.
Quote : | "Richard Brehaut and Josh Nunes have fans buzzing
The quarterbacks from Los Osos and Upland, who have committed to UCLA and Tennessee, respectively, are showing how high they have raised their skills.
Quarterbacks Richard Brehaut of Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos and Josh Nunes of Upland are throwing passes with so much power and accuracy this summer that some UCLA and Tennessee fans probably wish they'd skip their senior years and enroll immediately at their future colleges.
On Friday at La Verne Bonita, Brehaut and Nunes were on adjacent fields playing in a seven-on-seven passing tournament, and it was fun going back and forth to watch two quarterbacks who I'd label as can't-miss college prospects.
Both have raised their skills to an elite level, and fans of UCLA and Tennessee have started showing up to see what they'll offer when they arrive in Westwood and Knoxville, respectively, in 2009.
What's scary is that Brehaut also can run, and Martinez has plans this fall to turn him loose with "quarterback counters, quarterback sweeps and quarterback options."
As for the 6-4 Nunes, he stands back in the pocket and fires away. He threw seven touchdown passes in a 40-minute game against Newhall Hart, leaving the Indians' defensive backs with their heads down afterward.
His decision to choose Tennessee even though he has yet to visit the campus came because he likes the competition of SEC football and was convinced he could succeed after speaking to several ex-Tennessee quarterbacks, including the Clausen brothers, Casey and Rick.
"It's a real good fit for me," he said.
If Nunes didn't understand how high-profile the Tennessee quarterback position is, he soon found out after his commitment recently. Asked how many phone calls he has received, Nunes said, "Too many."
He did a couple of radio shows and still hadn't finished calling back people by Friday.
Come fall, Brehaut and Nunes will lead their respective teams in Baseline League play. They square off in a league game on Oct. 24 at Los Osos. Don't be surprised if FSN Prime Ticket chooses it as its game of the week." |
That's awesome that UCLA and Tennessee have a home-and-home now. These kids will probably go to the game in LA together this year and be suited up on opposite sidelines at Neyland in 2009.7/1/2008 12:47:55 PM |

Got two more today, 4-star CB from Ohio, and 3-star OL from Georgia
Quote : | "The summer recruiting frenzy continues for Phillip Fulmer and his staff as the Vols landed two more commitments Wednesday morning.
Middletown, Ohio cornerback D.J. Hunter is on his way back to Ohio today after spending Tuesday and this morning on Tennessee's campus checking out things. Hunter confirmed to Volquest this morning as he left Knoxville that he committed to Fulmer today.
The 6-foot-0, 196 pound Hunter is a four-star cornerback who picks the Vols over everyone in the Big 10 including Ohio State.
Rivals.com ranks Hunter as the 14th best cornerback in America.
On the offensive side, line coach Greg Adkins has found success in Valdosta, Georgia with offensive guard Antonio Foster. Foster has been saying for weeks that if things went well on his unofficial visit in late July that he would be a Vols.
Tuesday night, Foster decided he couldn't wait on that visit to pull the trigger on a decision. Foster said he knew where he wanted and that Tennessee was the best fit for him which is why he called the Vol coaching staff Wednesday morning to tell him his decision.
The 6-foot-4, 285 pound Foster chose the Vols over Georgia Tech and South Carolina.
Rivals.com ranks Foster as a three star prospect and the 32nd best offensive guard in the country" |
