i bought 5 and got 4 chillin in the fridge, one is on the counter next to some bananas. i hope the apples in the fridge don't cause them all to ripen at once!
avocados mature on the tree but do not ripen until they fall off or are picked. only a mature avocado will ripen. so watch out what you buy!

I think my parents have an avocado tree in Phoenix....Though I've never actually seen an avocado on it, and it's pretty small. I believe that my dogs like to urinate on it....so apparently dog piss does not help grow avocado trees 4/9/2008 10:58:11 PM |

good avocados come from grafted clones I think
avocado trees take forever to produce a couple lame fruits and are therefore usually just decorative
speaking of decorative
I like avocado imagery in art (strange, I know)

Quote : | "the yellow part freaks me out. and isn't it all cholesterol anyway?" |
Yeah, 5 grams of pure cholesterol
Look, this misconception has to go. Dietary cholesterol has NO effect on increasing cholesterol in your body. It is saturated fat consumption that increases cholesterol in your body. And while egg yolks contain saturated fat, they also contain monounsaturated fat, which is very good for you, and is the same fat found in olives and avocados. And if you get eggs from free-range chickens or naturally-fed chickens, the yolk also contains omega-3 fat (as in the fat found in fish), which does all sorts of miracles for your body. And get this:
EGG YOLKS ARE ONE OF THE HEALTHIEST FOODS OUT THERE. EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE ONE A DAY OR EVERY 2 DAYS.
[Look up choline, one of the constituents of the yolk that makes it superhealthy and good for your brain.[/b]
You know that old medical "wisdom" saying you shouldn't eat more than 2 yolks a week, well no one is parroting that any more. The whole scientific and medical community is in agreement regarding what I said in bold above.
And yeah, the yolk contains as much protein as the white.
Quote : | "Yeah when it comes to hard boiled eggs, I really don't care for the yolk texture." |
Neither do I, but that's why I always have soft-boiled eggs or lightly fried eggs with the yolk still intact and liquidy or semi-liquidy. Nothing better tasting than that.

Quote : | "I've always had avocado in a sweet context. That's how people eat them in Asia. Thinking of avocado in savory context frightens me." |
I love this!
OK, my story:
I discovered avocados on my own and started eating them like this: I would cut them into quarters, and then just "dip" them into some brown sugar (big crystals) and then take a bite. It is heavenly.
Then someone I told that to was weirded out and said I should try an avocado cut into quarters sprinkled with a little salt, black pepper, and lemon juice. And I was like WTF?
Anyway, I tried it and loved it.
So now I enjoy them in both styles.
Here are some methods of preparation I love:
Avocado, Tomato, and Fresh Mozzarella Salad
Cube all three and just mix them together. Don't puree the avocado (avocado must not be too ripe). Sprinkle with some Italian herbs such as basil, oregano, etc., and salt and pepper if you wish.
Alternatively, cut all three into thin slices and stack the slices (2 of eah if you like!) on top of some nice crusty grainy hearty bread to make breathtakingly beautiful and delicious open-faced sandwiches. Spread a little pesto on the bread first. I tried it yesterday, and it was heavenly! I didn't have fresh mozzarella, so I tried the regular one but melted, and it was still great.
Note: You can also add cucumber to the above, whether in salad form or as a sandwich.
Avocado Smoothie
OK, I have never made that myself yet, but I go to this one restaurant which makes the most amazing avocado smoothie you will never taste. Did I say smoothie? It is actually a meal unto itself. Or more appropriately dessert.
They serve it in a tall glass. It is made with unsweetened milk, but honey is drizzled throught out the glass (but NOT mixed), so you can see "strands" of honey interspersed with the smoothie through the glassall around. Then some honey on the top as well. Then some pine nuts and blanched cashew halves which have been soaked beforehand, so they are soft. And then it is topped off with some real rustic fresh cream (not the whipped canned stuff). And it is served with a spoon, not a straw.
It is pure heaven.
Guacamole
My wife and I make a real mean one! It is quite easy. Just mash 2-3 ripe avocados, and cube 1-2 almost-ripes ones. Cube tomato and cucumber, as little or as much as you like. Experiment with ratios until you find what you like. Juice 1/2 to 1 lemon. And then 2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed with a garlic crusher. We like it garlickier than most! You can also add some Italian herbs, fresh or dried. Chopped fresh parsley works nice.
For an interesting twist, we buy some tabbouleh and mix it into the finished guacamole. Amazing.4/10/2008 4:48:08 AM |

If you don't like cilantro, you hate America
Quote : | "The leaves, and especially the stems, have a very different taste from the seeds, similar to parsley but "juicier" and with citrus-like overtones. Some people instead perceive an unpleasant "soapy" taste and/or a rank smell. This is believed to be a result of an enzyme that changes the way they taste coriander leaves, a genetic trait, but has yet to be fully researched" |

OMFG EVERY HUMAN BODY AND BRAIN IS DIEFFERENT!!!
In fact, as far as avocados go, they don't have much of a taste of their own, so unless some people perceive a nasty taste in it because of some weird genetics in their body, I don't see how anybody can call it "disgusting."
To me, they taste great, and even greater with salt, sugar, lemon, etc.
And they are super-healthy. 4/10/2008 7:44:16 AM |

^^Cilantro tastes nothing like parsley to me...not even close. I couldn't tell you what it tastes like to me because I've never ever come across anything that remotely tastes similar. I'm aware however, in my many discussions with people over the years, that either you love it or you hate it. Most people love it...but there are a few who hate it. I mean I could maybe name 2 people besides myself....maybe.
^Obviously...I just sayin that's how I feel about em. I am not now, nor should I ever be a food critic. I like mac & cheese with ketchup on it. I also, if sitting in front of a top sirloin steak and a plate of french fries would choose the fries. Not because I don't like steak, but just because I like fries better... 4/10/2008 8:15:36 AM |

Never seen it, but damn, that sounds so logical, to someone who uses avocados and knows their texture when mashed: soft, light, and slippery.

restaurant guacamole nearly always comes from bruised/browned avocados like that
(they're not bad, just overripe -- if they're bad, you'll know, 'cause they'll smell really funny and may have mold on them)
don't worry though, they taste nearly exactly the same and don't pose any health risks 5/8/2008 4:51:49 PM |

Does anyone know if there is a way to keep part of an avocado if you don't have a vacuum sealer? If I'm just cooking for me, I may not want to use an entire avocado at once, but right now I pretty much have to since it doesn't keep once it's been cut. It'd be nice if I could use half and then use the other half a day or two later... 5/8/2008 5:55:43 PM |
