^^^Your math is based on some really bad assumptions. You may have just missed that utilities were included. What makes you think she uses half the water/energy he does? 2 people in 1 bathroom still (in theory) take 2 showers. 2 people in 1 bedroom still generate twice the laundry of one (excluding bed linens). Are the two people sharing the bedroom only enjoying heat/AC half as much as he is? Are we to assume that the couple doesn't use appliances any more than the single did? Also, how do you allocate other utility usage such as cable, phone, internet?

4/7 grossly underestimates many of these costs.

Actually on a related note, here's a question:

Situation I was almost in but not, and I'm wondering.

So, There are 3 bedrooms, and 4 people. 2 of them are a couple.
Bedrooms are equal size.

I wanted a room to myself, obviously. Person #4 was willing to share dorm style with someone.
Thus it was declared that persons #1 2 and 4 would pay equal shares
I would pay 2x an equal share. Reasoning? I was the only one who WANTED a room to myself. Even though #4 would get one anyways. It was quote "unfair to her" to make her pay a full 1/3.

How would you have split it?
I would have thought equal utilities and 1/3 rent per bedroom would have been fair - so basically said "screw this".

If the person thought it was unfair to make them pay for the whole room because they didn't need a whole room, should have quit bitching and found someone to share the room with.

If you reserve a luxury car to rent and when you get there say, "Oh, I only needed an economy car so just charge me for that" they will laugh at you and this is the same situation. If you don't want to pay for it because you don't need it, don't commit to it.

^^^ that's just for rent, i'm not used to utilities being included.

Utilities shouldn't be based on rooms. Weed out the utilities cost, $1/3 for each resident.

4/7(rent) + 2/3(util). I thought the thread was just for rent sry.
