is this even a lot of shootings for a city of such large size? how many shootings happen over a typical weekend in la, philadelphia, new york or london for that matter? why so much emphasis on chicago?

^^^ Well, Detroit, I think, tops the list for violent crime and/or murders. But would you want to attend a school system in which 290 students were wounded and 34 were killed during the 2008-2009 school year as happened in Chicago? The answer is self-evident.

And to the doofuses here, the situation in Chicago was brought to my attention by the International Herald Tribune (a publication of The New York Times) and ABC News--neither of which is a right-wing organization. From last night's ABC broadcast (one of a series):
