Did we come to a conclusion on what you're supposed to do when you see someone from a distance?
It's always seems awkward when you're close enough to know who the other person is, but still far enough to say anything other than "hey" loudly. Then there's that awkward bit when you walk towards each other smiling nicely but not making eye contact until you pass each other, but if neither of you stop, all you can say is "see ya." What are you supposed to do in that space other than look at each other and smile?

what's even worse is when you are unsure if you should say hello when you pass a semi-acquaintance...one of two things will happen:

1) you decide not to say hello, they say hello, and you feebly whisper "hehhh" before passing

2) you say "hey, how are you?" and they say "fine, and you?" but you've already passed...do you turn around, reply, and keep the conversation going, or do you just let it ride?

I have a problem with not smiling until the other person has nearly passed by me. It takes conscious thought for me to smile most of the time.

^^ that last bit is part of my question... cuz if you don't start the conversation and it is with a friend til you're within not shouting distance, by the time anyone says anything you're walking in opposite directions.

I don't really have this issue (at work at least) because everyone I pass in the halls always seems to be way too distracted/socially awkward to actually look at me.

Most of them seem to be doing everything in their power to not look at me. Maybe I'm the problem...

I think that part of the problem is that some people use those phrases as greetings and don't really mean the literal part. So if one person says, "Hey, what's up," they might just mean hello. Whereas another person would take it as a conversational opener. Then awkwardness ensues.
