Some people's boxes need to be reset a lot... that is a major glitch... my only pet-peeve is that when you delete a recorded show from the list menu it remains on the screen but if you try to scroll it starts changing channels in the guide at the bottom of the screen... so you have to exit everything and re-open list... so if you want to delete multiple shows or delete one and watch another its a pita.

BUT:
With my external 500gig drive under the old software i could no longer rewind live tv but i can now.... this was huge for me.

I do like the old "search" better also just cause it canceled out letters that were not an option.

there have also been some weird things added... like if i hit select while i'm on an hbo or a shotime a list of all the (either hbo or shotime) channels comes up... weird and useless but kinda cool.
I do like how if you hit menu you can go to "list" or "guide" from the menu it brings up as well as all of the on demand channels.

To be honest... the negatives don't even come close to bothering me compared to my former in ability to re-wind live tv.

ok, I am housesitting and am having to use this abortion of a DVR. (god I miss my DTV!)

anyway, I am watching lost from last night on a non-hdtv. And yet, the DVR seems to be zooming in on the letterboxed version. What can I do?? Its like it is only sending an HD version or something and I can't find anywhere in the settings to change this.

Any help?

i swapped DVRs after mine crashed yesterday and have had TONS of problems since. i called TWC support and received no answer after 35 minutes.

i scheduled my DirectTV install just a minute ago. i'm cancelling everything but roadrunner as soon as that is installed. TWC screwed the pooch royally with their new Navigator combined with lack of support.

DirectTV here I come!

before the upgrade, i used to be able to browse current programming by category, and i used to browse by movies b/c it would sort them by time, thus allowing me to easily see what movies were on right now and for the next couple hours. with navigator, you can browse by category, but it's sorted alphabetically, so i have no idea what's on right now. i'll see something i like but it's not on for 3 days. though it is nice that navigator includes on demand movies in the list, it basically takes away one of the only features i used on a daily basis

^^theres a setting for it

I don't remember what it's called, but it's pretty obvious. You change it from that channel to "last channel viewed" or whatever.

it's pretty much useless to me. with the old navigator, i could justify sticking with TWC, but with a nice surrounding setup and a horrible dvr unit...it's time to switch.

i haven't got the new navigator yet, but the old one has been noticeably slower the last few days. scrolling through channels in the guide works fine, but bringing up the guide or selecting a channel from the guide takes 1-2 seconds. it's very annoying when you hit the guide button, nothing happens, hit it again, and then it comes up and goes away.

twc just left my house. they gave me a bad box and had screwed up all the signals at my house and had to adjust those. the guy was there for about an hour, could barely speak english, and made a mess of my home theater setup...he pulled stuff all over the place and didn't put ANYTHING back.

i can't wait for june 16th to have directTV instead...

jeebus, twc finally applied the new navigator to my digital box (non-DVR) today and as soon as i turn it on it's absolute shit. pulling up the guide is a little faster, but paging up and down the guide is just plain broken. some channels will be missing unless i type the channel in directly. for example a while ago it was missing 2-32, then showing up to 56, then skipped to 112 with a few more missing in between those. no wonder you guys have been complaining!

^^you have to set you guide priorities. more than likely its set to show your favorites first, hence the missing channels on the guide. exact same thing happened to me.

just go to the set up page and you can fix it fairly easily. beware though, when you are searching the guide for shows...dont hit your favorite button or it will actually change to the next fav channel instead of showing whats playing on the guide

had this thing for a while now and i still hate it

i don't know if it has something to do with testing SDV with the new temporary olympic channels or what, but my DVR 8300HD has crashed 4 times since midnight and many more times during the day today, and I have watched nothing but the olympics.

You aren't the only one with odd issues. SDV is messing with a lot of people. Meanwhile, DirecTV is working great for me. I have a TWC digital box also, and haven't even checked to see what I'm receiving with it. D* is working fine - though some subscribers did have some trouble early on.

^^ I gave up on timewarner because of the SA8300HDC dying on me constantly and their refusal to either aknowledge I effectively never actually had the dvr service I was paying for or provide me a working DVR. This was about... 7 months ago.

Whats the deal with the 8240 HD-DVR? I had an 8300, but the install guy gave me an 8240. At first it seemed like the only difference was a cable card slot on the 8240, but I've started noticing small differences...like if i pause live tv I can't fast forward from the pause, i have to hit play first.

is the 8240 running different software than the 8300s?

The only difference is that the 8240 removed the analog tuner compared to the 8300HDC.

I just sent a bitchy email to TWC about their service.

I got tired of being called by sales people who hang up on you (and I was polite, too, and they didn't give me a split second to tell them to stop calling me) as soon as you let on that you're probably not interested in giving them more money. I also got tired of our internet service being shitty (ok, the 7mbps upgrade is great if it's working properly for you, but our internet is unstable for online gaming and doesn't deliver fully on bandwidth. earlier this week we got 1.5-3mbps for several days). I'm also doubly tired of the digital service being shitty (audio stuttering and video glitches, the video just generally being overcompressed and blocky on many channels) and tired of their firmware updates that nearly brick the box by making it as slow as shit and fucking up our DVR settings (randomly losing shows we had scheduled to record regularly, etc). I started having a lot more problems after the 12 month deal wore off (so my rates went up 33%). I wouldn't have bitched if the service delivered most of the time as promised, but every night it seems something else is wrong with this shit.

I look forward to hearing from them. I'll probably keep bugging them if they don't respond favorably as I'm being more than reasonable considering how shitty they are.

I might just have to cut down some trees so I can get a LOS for satellite and be rid of this POS once and for all.

^It's sad that TWC feels free to let people get so pissed off at them that cutting down stands of trees seems like an acceptable length to go to to get access to their only real competitor...

FiOS... please get here within my lifetime.

^Agreed. If FIOS was here, that would solve a lot of the current problems. When TWC actually works, the picture quality if very good I think. I fear that satellite will be worse in terms of quality of picture, but the DVR should be more dependable. I'm tolerating the crappy TWC service for now since I am on a 1 year reduced rate and they are starting to implement channel switching which in theory should allow TWC to offer more HD channels without sacrificing picture quality. Once football/basketball season starts and my DVR decides it can't be bothered to record the game, I may get out the chainsaw.

Satellite is more consistent, but the compression they use seems to dull the colors. Broadcast is going to look better obviously since it's not compressed in most cases. You can really tell the difference when watching football games because the color of the grass on satellite (DirecTV at least) is just not right; it's too drab considering it's ultra-green plastic in real life (or golf-course quality turf.)

Now, while the color on cable seems better on the HD channels, the pixelation and audio is complete shit by comparison. I don't know a single person who has not experienced at least some fairly frequent sound hiccups on HD channels when they are using a digital sound output. The worst offending channel around here (for some strange-ass reason) is TNTHD. Since I was a huge law and order fan, it drove me crazy and made me want to do horrible and perverse things to TWC executives.

Maybe it's changed in the last 4 months of so, but as far as I can remember the image on satellite is better and more consistent but the color on cable is superior. The real deciding factor is the sound. I could deal with a blocky frame every now and then, but god damn if the sound is cutting in and out it's almost painful.

you may have issues with your box or tv. i have directv on two tvs (a 50" 720p sammy and 32" 1080p aquos) and they both have perfect pictures. the hd is very crisp and the colors are MUCH better than with twc.

twc sound is nowhere close to satellite sound. it's ridiculous comparing the two imo.

directv's hardware and software are both infinitely better than twc as well.

switching was the best a/v decision i've made in a long time, not to mention my bill is $50 cheaper per month.

^It might have changed, I'm comparing what it was about 4-6 months ago. Might have even been longer than that; it was before DirecTV added that huge pile of new HD channels.
