true, i also think they do need to bring back the student patrol again, if for anything dorm roving like they used to always do, would free up the campus police a little...

having ROTC squads walk shifts on F-M would also go a long ways...

Well, we are in a recession, gas and food prices are going up, I guess more crime is to be expected.

I never felt totally safe at night on campus. I always avoided the dark, hard-to-see spots like the tunnels and parking decks. I would walk on the main streets when I could, and not take shortcuts between buildings. Hell, I'm on edge at night anywhere... even in my parents' neighborhood I was taking out the trash at 11PM and some scary-looking guy was walking up the street. After that I put a pistol in my pocket every time I took out the trash at night. Maybe if students could carry guns legally, the robberies would drop off.

As for free escorts, I've heard that if you're a male they'll just laugh at you.

they can laugh, but it's been mostly males that have been robbed as of recent

Whether campus is 'safe' or not is not all that important. A couple of robberies don't make it a hotbed of violent crime where one needs to feel afraid to walk around. I assure you there have been many more sexual assaults than robberies, both reported and not, grey and clear-cut, but the female campus community is not suddenly afraid to socialize and drink, all because a couple of other girls were date-raped.

Life isn't safe. Get over it.

It's not possible to be prepared 24/7 for any eventuality, but far too many people seem to have this notion that their safety is completely guaranteed, no matter what they're doing, or where they are. And so they don't do things like stay alert, observe their surroundings, take steps to keep themselves safe or use common sense.

And this is true both on and off campus.

I think this campus needs more than free escorts after hours. Does anyone remember the shooting last year where a student escort and the person he was escorting were shot at?

I used to walk from the library to other parts of campus, Hillsborough, etc a lot at night when I was still a student. Never felt unsafe. Sometimes you'd get a homeless guy asking for money but that's about it.

That said, my little sister said the atmosphere isn't as good around campus at night these days. I wonder if that's true.

^During the last week of the spring semester I heard someone was robbed on Hillborough Street.

btw, does anyone else find it sort of annoying that they use the term dark/light complexion. Just say African American, White, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, or Asian. I've seen Mexicans that are just as dark as some African Americans. If I am supposed to watch out for the person then just be straight up about it. It's not racist to say he was black, or white.

^^

sometimes it's very obvious what ethnicity a person is

but sometimes it's not...sometimes ethnic labels simply couldn't be as reliable as describing shades

there's hispanic people who look black...there's middle eastern people who look white...there's white people who look hispanic...there's hispanic people who look asian...there's indian people who look black

it really gets difficult if the suspect is hooded/it's dark/comes up from behind/doesn't say much

i understand what you're saying, though

in reality though we all know who is behind 80% of the armed robberies around NCSU. Espicially given the statistics of the demographics that occupy our city correlating in education level. I do not think Sabeep Ramunegusanian or Ackbar Al-Cameljockey is going to risk blowing their higher education opportunity here at NCSU for $8 and a timex watch off some students walking home at night.

i ain't arguing that

all i'm saying if some dude who looked like red sox player david ortiz robs me, i'm gonna have a hard time pinning an accurate ethnic definite label on the guy

remember that student who got shot in the face outside the bookstore a couple of years ago? the police drawing looked like haji from johnny quest...the guy who did it didn't even end up looking anything like the sketch

wait they got rid of student patrol??? what the hell? I worked with them for 3 years while I was a student. Each night we worked from 6pm till 3am. Our main job was providing escorts for anyone who hit up a blue light. Also locked up a lot of the buildings at night. We broke up campus into zones and each officer was responsible for escorts in that area. We had a flashlight and radio. We tried and tried but they would not allow us to carry a baton or pepper spray. Our reasoning is that most of the time when fight calls and what not came out we were on scene long before campus police showed up.

^^^^^^

When I first got to state the reports used to be about nothing other than African-Americans robbing people. Now its only people with dark-complexions robbing other people. I am glad to see that African-Americans have finally started following the law but sad to see that tanned white people are breaking it. What has our campus come to?

I've always felt pretty safe on campus. Then again, after 11 PM, about the only places I'm walking to was down to the BAR then back up to my second story room. Or maybe over to Lee. Otherwise, it was out with a group of people to somewhere. Hell, I actually got a call from Campus Police that my car had a security risk...my car was parked in the Bragaw lot and the back passenger window was rolled all the way down. I didn't have anything to steal except a pair of sunglasses and a nice stereo, but everything was right as rain (I did get a considerable amount of snow in my car though).

I'd like to see what source says that they no longer do escorts...Bad decision on our university's part. I used them the one time I came back during a weekend and parked in the West Lot with goodies from home. I waited in the campus police building, and a guy came and walked me back to Tucker.

^ They still do escorts. They don't do student patrols like they used to.
