somebody needs to start a different "non-partisan" study group whose sole mission is to debunk these nanny state alarmist studies which seek to worry society out of every modern convenience.

I should be able to drink while I drive because my tax dollars paid for the roads and for alcohol regulation. 5/13/2008 9:43:01 PM |

Well, I sort of think you should be able to do just that. Ideally you'd just get absolutely destroyed financially and criminally in the case of a collision in which you were at fault. In fact, I'd like to see that regardless or whether you're sober or not. There's no reason to make it illegal to "drive while doing ____" just make the punishment appropriate in the even that something happens. Simply having alcohol in your system or talking on the cell phone shouldn't increase or decrease the severity of your punishment.
Ideally I'd just make it a shitload harder to get a license and keep one and then start punishing people for "accidents." A couple of hundred dollar ticket for failure to stop or whatever it is they dish out just isn't enough. Start enforcing it enough and people will begin clamoring for cars that drive themselves, which is the kind of transport we should be working towards anyway. BMW is damn near there already. 5/14/2008 3:00:16 AM |

cars that drive themselves... it's a dream of the future, but it's a dream that's a good ways off. i know that the tech is there but that means very little. i think it'd be awesome to be able to hop in a car and tell it where to take me sometimes (though i do enjoy a good drive now and then). that just won't happen. personally i'd rather drive with a cell phone than trust a car to drive itself, but at the same time i know that i'm capable of driving safely and using the phone at the same time. some aren't that capable, and those people scare me a little bit when they're driving even when they don't have their phone out. 5/14/2008 3:55:21 AM |
